THE WEEK AHEAD at the UN SECURITY COUNCIL

22 October - 26 October 2018

On Monday (22 October), Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix is scheduled to brief on the UN/AU Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID). Consultations are expected to follow.

On Tuesday (23 October) Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, the Special Representative and head of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA); Ambassador Léon Houadja Kacou Adom (Côte d’Ivoire), the chair of the 2127 Central African Republic (CAR) Sanctions Committee; and Koen Vervaeke, the Managing Director for Africa of the European Exernal Action Service, are expected to brief on the situation in CAR. The Special Representative of the AU to the CAR Bédializoun Moussa Nébié might brief as well. The briefing will be followed by consultations, in which Lacroix is expected to participate.

Also on Tuesday (23 October), Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock is expected to brief on the humanitarian situation in Yemen, particularly the link between conflict and food insecurity.

ICJ President Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf will brief the Council in a private meeting on Wednesday (24 October).

Also on Wednesday, the Council is scheduled to receive a briefing on Myanmar from Marzuki Darusman, the Chairperson of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar.

On Thursday (25 October), there will be an open debate on the topic “Women, Peace and Security: promoting the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda and sustaining peace through women’s political and economic empowerment”. Secretary-General António Guterres is expected to make a statement. Briefings are anticipated from Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Executive Director of UN Women, and Randa Siniora Atallah, the Director of the Women's Center for Legal Aid and Counseling. 

At the subsidiary body level, there will be meetings of the 1591 Sudan Sanctions Committee and the 2206 South Sudan Sanctions Committee on Wednesday (24 October). Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict Pramila Patten is expected to brief in both meetings.

Three Arria-formula meetings are planned for next week. On Monday (22 October), an Arria-formula meeting has been scheduled on the use of sanctions in addressing sexual violence in conflict. On Friday (26 October), Arria formula meetings are anticipated on water, peace and security and on children born from sexual violence in conflict.
