Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora koutou, Highlights from our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Monday 21 September. Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from the Pleasant Point Yacht Club as part of our Public Forum. The Board approved a proposed lease (subject to public notification) to the Christchurch Slot Car Club at Halberg Reserve and heard from Peter Darrell and representatives of the club in support of their application. We also received the Waitai/Coastal-Burwood Community Board Area Report for September, which highlights all the projects and great work being done in our area. You can read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here. Daylight saving means it’s tsunami siren testing timeWe’re testing Christchurch’s tsunami sirens this weekend, so if you live within a few blocks of the coast, you should hear them at 11am on Sunday. We normally test the sirens every six months but didn’t during the COVID lockdown in April so this will be the first test we’ve done in a year. The sirens will sound for about three minutes at 11am on Sunday 27 September. Sirens are located along the coast from Brooklands to Taylors Mistake. It’s a good time to check whether you are in a tsunami evacuation zone, plan with your family about where you would go and how you would get there if you had to evacuate, as well as making everyone aware of the “long or strong, get gone” message. Recognition for long-time member of Ascot Community CentreYvonne Ritchie is retiring after 25 years of looking after bookings for the Ascot Community Centre in QEII Park – and Christchurch City Council will this week begin looking for a new group to manage the facility. With Yvonne set to retire from her booking administrator role at the end of this year, groups are encouraged to register their interest in managing the Christchurch City Council-owned community centre as part of an Expression of Interest process opening on Friday 25 September. Yvonne received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Coastal–Burwood Community Board on Monday 21 September for her years of service. Coastal–Burwood Community Board Chair Kelly Barber says the award recognises Mrs Ritchie’s significant contribution over the years. “Yvonne is a well-known and respected member of the community and the Council is very appreciative of the work she’s done managing the bookings for the community centre.
