iStart Australia

Hi there,

Tomorrow, Australians and New Zealanders will stand side by side – figuratively, if not literally – as we commemorate our servicemen and women, many of whom experienced unimaginable horrors on battlefields far from home, and returned to a changed world.

Of the many things I’ve read this week about Anzac Day and Covid, the words of RSL Victoria State president Robert Webster stand out. In words which apply as much to Kiwis as Australians he said as we face continued uncertainty due to Covid, it is important to reflect that everyone bears the qualities of Anzac – courage, ingenuity, humour, endurance and mateship –within themselves.

It’s that spirit and the qualities of Anzac that will help guide both countries out of the difficult times that lie ahead. Conversation this week between the PMs on restarting trans-Tasman travel is an encouraging example of how that spirit might play out.

Lest we forget.

In this week’s news:

  • Lockdown loosens e-commerce purse strings
  • Google, Facebook content crackdown steps up
  • Mary Meeker’s Covid trends
  • Anzac Day's virtual challenge
  • The week's other news

Enjoy the read and remain safe,

ANZAC DAY

As Anzac Day goes virtual, the spirit remains

Virtual poppies, online donations and driveways at dawn, lest we forget…

Anzac day

We may not be able to stand side by side at Anzac Services this year, but New Zealanders and Australians are still being called on to commemorate with a blending of the virtual and real worlds.

They too bear the qualities of Anzac – courage, ingenuity, humour, endurance and mateship – within themselves.
