Discovering Scilly's Dark Night Skies

The Isles of Scilly AONB Partnership is working with the Dark Sky Discovery Programme to nominate Dark Sky Discovery Sites across the Isles of Scilly.

Dark Sky Discovery (DSD) is a partnership of national and local astronomy and environmental organisations whose aim is to:

*Engage people from a diverse range of backgrounds with the Dark Night Sky;

*Encourage positive attitudes towards science and technology;

*Support the development of dark sky places for local awareness and tourism;

*Develop a national network of dark sky communicators;

*Create long-lasting organisational partnerships in this area.

...................................................................................................

What are Dark Sky Discovery Sites (DSDS)?

DSDS are local sites that are great for viewing the night's sky and are accessible to all.

The Dark Sky Discovery Partnership is working to create a network of sites across the UK.

In the South West there is a DSDS within Exmoor National Park Dark Sky Reserve.

.................................................................................................

Where are the proposed Dark Sky Discovery Sites in Scilly?

Scilly is a great place for viewing the stars due to low levels of light pollution and clean air, especially at the more remote locations.

The following sites have been chosen as they provide great views of the night's sky and are accessible to all:

*St Mary's- The Garrison Playing Field

*St Agnes- The Cricket Pitch

*Bryher- The Community Centre Play Area

*Tresco- The Playing Fields (Old Grimsby)

*St Martin's- The Cricket Pitch, Pool Green

Nominations for these sites will be taken forward at the end of August 2012.

.................................................................................................

What does this mean for Scilly?

If nominations for Scilly's proposed sites are successful, they will join a network of other sites across the UK.

The sites will be promoted through the DSD partnership . This means that people who are interested in astronomy will be able to view locations in the UK which are recognised as good for stargazing.

Those connected to the tourism industry in Scilly can promote Scilly's dark night skies, adding to the visitor experience.

Star Gazing walks may be held at these sites during the Autumn/Winter months offering local residents and visitors the opportunity to discover Scilly's dark night skies.

A Look Back at Previously Supported Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) Projects

St Agnes Boating: Online Booking

This innovative project was awarded £3,200 SDF grant-aid in 2011, with significant support also from the Isles of Scilly Local Action Group.

St Agnes Boating carried out community consulation which showed the need for improved accessibility, greater affordability and clarity of timetabling.

The St Ashnes Boating project specifically sought to  address the frequency and cost of travel between the Islands. This affects access to education, social services, shopping, medical care, leisure and access to employment opportunities.

The project delivered a bespoke interactive website to advertise the scheduled times of St Agnes Boating services. The system allows users to view a schedule of boat times and destinations. Customers can see if other people have already booked on a journey, therefore creating an incentive to share journeys - a saving for both the customer and the environment.

John Peacock, St Agnes Boating Partner explained to the AONB Unit that 'The St Agnes Boating booking system has enabled our customers to share the costs of boating in a transparent manner. This has enabled us to maximise the efficiency of our operations, reducing the amount of fuel that we consume and therefore reducing our carbon emmisions. It has also enabled us to match the number of passengers traveling to the size of boat.

Our new philosophy of boating has been widely praised around the islands and we are now seen as a fair and transparent operator. It has raised my personal profile on the islands and I am regularly asked to talk about sustainable boating in Scilly at various meetings. I am also now a director of the newly formed Islands Tourism and Business Partnership. Without LAG and SDF support I am positive that I would not have had such a strong mandate for change in the islands'.

Beach Cleans in the AONB:Results for 2012...so far

The AONB Partnership is pleased to announce results from its 2012 beach cleans, so far.

We are proud to have worked with so many volunteers, both locals and visitors alike. The cleanup of our beautiful beaches would not have been possible without their help.

The Results

*17 beach cleans have been coordinated across the Islands since February 2012;

*Over 440 volunteers have helped clean marine litter from Scilly's beaches so far this year;

*154 black bags were filled with litter since March 2012!

*55 large items were recovered from beaches including car tyres, a fridge, fishing nets, trawler nets, fish crates, oil drums, BBQs and fishing floats.

The majority of litter  has been washed up on our shores from activities out at sea.

However, unfortunately this year we have collected rubbish which has been carelessly dumped (fly-tipped) on beaches. We found numerous tin cans, bottles and disposable BBQs, which pose not only a threat to wildlife and humans, but also to the natural beauty of the Islands.

The Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust manages 60% of the land in Scilly, including many of the beaches that the AONB Partnership helps to clean.

The Council of Isles of Scilly help with the dispoal of beach clean waste.

The Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust and the Council of the Isles of Scilly are members of the AONB Partnership.

Exploring the AONB with the Five Islands' School

The Isles of Scilly AONB staff team collaborated with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust earlier this month to deliver a day full of activities with the Five Islands School during their 'activities week'.

We explored the nature trail at Lower Moors discovering the birds, plants and other wildlife which rely on this important habitat.

We turned boulders and seaweed on a rock pool ramble at Old Town Bay, discovering a large variety of marine wildlife such as Shore Crabs, Gobies and Pipe Fish. We even found a rare and unusual Stalked Jellyfish!

After lunch we took a walk up to Peninnis headland where the group learnt all about the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust's Conservation Grazing Programme and how important this is for both wildlife and people in the AONB.
