Kingswood College Where Potential Soars Kingswood College

Message from the President

Already almost two months into 2014.  Time is flying and the College is kicking off with Open Day this Saturday 1 March 2014!  I recommend a visit.  Come and tour the old school.  Check out what has changed and what is, as you remember.

In this edition we feature Alistair Hopkins as our Wyvernian profile.  Alistair taught at the College from 1972 to 1998, and made a significant contribution as a custodian of the College ethos, teacher and mentor.  He was much loved and respected by his students and peers.  Alistair has been good enough to share something of his time at, and after, Kingswood College.

This edition also showcases and congratulates Olivia Chambers and Sebastian Cummins winners of the 2013 UNSW Physics Competition. It is the second consecutive win for our Year 12 students.

The annual International Women’s Day Dinner is being held at the Box Hill Golf Club.  This event is open to females and males and tends to be booked out quickly.  So use it as an excuse to catch up with some of your old class mates, listen to two inspirational speakers and hear the College Girls’ Vocal Group perform.

We are looking to another busy year with Reunions, as work continues to improve our communication and connection with our members.

The 125 year college anniversary is in 2015 … not far away.  More than ever we welcome contributions and involvement from all of our members and would be pleased to hear from you.

We are looking to further develop our mentor and inspire program and encourage Wyvernians to make contact and advise of milestones and achievements, become involved with the Association committee, help with preparation for Reunions, identify Wyvernians to profile, or just let us know what is happening.  Our new Facebook pages are a great point of contact, as is the College website, or just send an email.  Don’t be a stranger!

I hope that 2014 is an exciting and rewarding year for you all and extend a challenge that is the College theme this year – Be the change you seek in the world – Ghandi.

International Women's Day Dinner

For the third consecutive year the PFA will host a dinner to celebrate International Women’s Day. The dinner will be held at the Box Hill Golf Club on Thursday 6 March from 6.30 pm.

The theme for this year is Ghandi’s quote that you should ‘be the change you wish to see in this world’. We have two great speakers who have done this: Sally Rippin, an author, illustrator and grass roots change maker in her local community of Carlton where she has championed the building of a Literacy Centre; and Nandy Gurr, a local woman working with UNESCO to have children taught in schools in rural areas of East Timor.  Both have a great story to tell and we would love you, your partners, your children (Year 6+) and any friends to join us.  Ticket prices are Adults $60, Students $50.

Tickets can be purchased through Try Booking. Act quickly to avoid missing out as places are limited and will sell quickly.  All proceeds from the evening will be donated to SOSK, a not-for-profit organisation which funds programs to promote education for orphan and slum children and training for destitute women in Kenya.

Wyvernian profile - Alistair Hopkins

When I joined the staff at Kingswood College at the start of 1972 I knew very little about the school and certainly had no idea that I would be there until I retired in 1998.The previous two years had been difficult ones for a variety of reasons, not least that I had come to the realisation that in studying theology, being ordained as a minister of the Presbyterian Church and then accepting an appointment as a school chaplain, I had taken a wrong turn. It had been an enriching and valuable nine years but they ended with the recognition that I was by conviction a secular humanist rather than religious and certainly did not have a vocation. Michael Norman’s offer of a position teaching senior English was very welcome.
