Welcome from the Chief Executive

We continue to build on our presence in Europe and develop our strong links with national actuarial associations and other key stakeholders. In 2012 we informed you that the Malta Actuarial Society had been launched and since then we have seen some great progress in the region. In early June I met with the Malta Financial Services Authority and it was the start of what I hope will be a valuable relationship. We will keep you updated on any further activity.

In September 2014 we will be hosting the International Actuarial Association (IAA) meetings in London and we are busy making plans for what we hope will be a highly successful event which will provide some excellent networking opportunities for IFoA members. Actuarial associations from across the globe will be attending and we look forward to announcing more details in due course.

In May 2014 we opened registration for the Certified Actuarial Analyst (CAA) Module 0 exam.  We have been delighted to receive such strong interest from Europe, with registrations from the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany and Italy. We value our European member community and will continue our active engagement in the region.

Certified Actuarial Analyst (CAA) - 3 weeks until exam registration closes

Exam registration for the first CAA exam session featuring Module 0, closes on Friday 18 June.

It has been many years since the IFoA offered a new membership qualification. The aim of CAA is to provide an internationally recognised credential for professionals working alongside actuaries, and to extend actuarial knowledge to a broader reach of technical and analytical roles in the financial services sector. As well as a level of technical expertise, the qualification develops wider skills such as communication and professionalism.

Within a month of launch, the IFoA had already seen interest from over 30 countries, confirming the global appeal of the CAA.

We would like to draw your attention to the following deadlines as the closing date for registration draws closer. Study material is available for those considering taking Module 0 with us in August.

  • 18 July 2014 by 17:00 (UK time) Exam registration deadline - you must complete the online registration by this date
  • 21 July 2014 by 17:00 (UK time) Exam payment deadline - you must have completed the payment for your exam by this date
  • 25 July 2014 by 17:00 (UK time) Exam centre booking deadline - you must have booked your exam with Pearson VUE by this date

You can read more about the CAA and its benefits, how it fits within the global market and how the CAA can help you in your career by viewing our web pages.

Nick Salter, President-elect wants to hear from you, on 'diversity'

The needs of our increasingly diverse membership are constantly evolving and the IFoA continues to evolve in response to these needs. We are acutely aware that the IFoA is a global organisation and that the needs of members will be different depending on where they work, what they are doing and what stage of their career they are at. We welcome the challenges this presents in delivering a first rate service to you all.

As Nick Salter, President-elect, prepares to assume the Presidency at the end of June, he would like to hear your views on the subject of “Diversity”. For the purpose of this survey, diversity will be taken to mean: age, gender, geographical location, membership status and practice area.

We would like to hear your views through a survey, which you can find here.

Please sumbit your thoughts by 26 June.

International Board

The IFoA’s International Board supports the delivery of the IFoA’s international strategy through:

  • Provision of strategic proposals;
  • Facilitation of effective communication on international matters; and
  • Overseeing the IFoA’s international representatives.

Should you have any queries about the work of the International Board please contact Rebecca Deegan.

Washington IAA Council and Committee meetings

The IAA is undertaking a significant review of its governance; they are encouraging all committees to produce a work-plan for the year ahead, this will feed into a dashboard, which is underway, to help to define the IAA’s goals from the top down.

The IAA is in the process of drafting a series of International Standards of Actuarial Practice (ISAPs). The IFoA has responded to the recent IAA consultation on ISAPs 5 and 6, for ERM, the response can be found on our website.

The IFoA is looking forward to welcoming our colleagues from across the world to the September IAA meetings in London.

AAE April and May Committee meetings

The AAE Standards Committee has approved the working copy of ESAP2. This has now been circulated to the AAE’s member associations for distribution. This document can be found on the IFoA’s website.
