Staying up late, sleeping in, food temptations, road trips, increased swimming and activities, and sleepovers – all factors that may impact on blood glucose levels. We asked Liz Broad, Clinical Nurse Consultant at Perth Children’s Hospital’s Diabetes Service, for her top tips for staying on target. Christmas nutrition tipsChristmas is fast approaching so we asked our nutrition research lead and Accredited Practising Dietitian, Dr Amelia Harray, for her advice on how to enjoy food and stay on track with managing type 1 diabetes over the festive break. New early years clinicIn order to meet the rising needs of all children with type 1 diabetes and their families in WA, the Diabetes Service will offer additional clinics in 2021. The clinics will cater for very young children with type 1 diabetes — infancy through to pre-school — and their families. Sleepovers and diabetesLove them or hate them but sleepovers are a popular pastime for children. Understandably, parents of children living with diabetes might be hesitant to leave them in someone else’s care but there are ways to ensure that they don't miss out on the fun. Congratulations Liz!Our co-director Professor Liz Davis has been awarded a Diabetes Australia Outstanding Achievement Award for her service to people living with diabetes, both nationally and internationally. New study: Low-carb dietsSome families are reporting restricting carbohydrate-containing foods to help manage their child's diabetes. We want to learn from families about how they implement low-carb diets and the benefits they find. Diabetes stress & coping studyWe are investigating the ways young people and their primary carers cope with stressors associated with type 1 diabetes. We intend to explore how these factors relate to physiological and psychological diabetes outcomes. Save the date: Cuppa catch upWe will be hosting a CONNECT Come and have a cuppa with the Diabetes Research Team on March 10, 2021.The event provides an opportunity to hear about the Centre’s research as well as chat to our researchers. BANDIT updateWe have had a few inquiries about the new BANDIT trial and whether we are involved. Currently, the trial is only open to people who live in Melbourne. The Centre is involved in other studies aiming to better understand diabetes. PCH Schools visitOur researchers were lucky enough to be invited to Perth Children’s Hospital School to talk to patients about type 1 diabetes and the research we are doing here at the Children’s Diabetes Centre recently. |
