The 2012 Athena Summer Fellows!

Athena Summer Fellows

The Athena Center is happy to announce the 10 rising seniors selected to be our 2012 Athena Summer Fellows.  They are Keren Baruch*, Kate Bergin, Lily Incangelo, Emma Lewis, Weihui Lu, Elise Mordos*, Bunge Okeyo*, Lauren Seaman*, Mica Spicka* and Kate Welsh.  The fellows are currently applying to internships in fields ranging from entrepreneurship to education, economic policy to publishing.  The Summer Fellowship is a competitive process, and what made these ten students stand out from the fifty plus who applied was their expressed commitment to supporting each other in developing their leadership and professional goals.

The Athena Summer Fellowship Program is open to all Barnard students finishing their junior year. Summer Fellows receive a $4,000 stipend and live together for 10 weeks, meeting regularly to reflect on their summer internship and participate in educational and social events with Athena Center staff and other leaders.

News from the Athena Student Advisory Board

The Athena Student Advisory Board is currently working on strengthening the program through community building efforts, academic program planning, and intellectual discussion.  Starting after Spring Break, the Board will host a series of brunches for 10-12 Scholars aimed building relationships across class year and discipline.  They are also crafting course evaluations for the Athena electives that all Scholars must complete. These evaluations serve two main purposes, one, it will let us know what courses truly reflect the values of the Athena Center; and two, it allows the students to reflect on the ways their electives directly connect with women and leadership.  In order to help our students in their course selection, the Board is also drafting a program planning worksheet that students can share with their faculty advisors.  These additions will serve to enhance the Scholars Program for all participants.
