45th Anniversary Profiles Continue on Global TV: This week's Feature -- Dr Owen Holmes

As part of the University of Lethbridge’s 45th anniversary year, a weekly profile will be broadcast on Global TV that features a person that embodies the U of L's story, whether it
be past, present or future.

Tune in this coming Thursday evening during the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts.

This week, the segment features Dr. Owen Holmes, a founding faculty member and author of  "Come Hell or High Water," a book about the formative years of the University. 

Last week’s profile featured Blaine Hendsbee, from the Faculty of Fine Arts (Music) talking about his experiences at the U of L and how his students benefit from the creative environment on campus. Get more information, here.

Teacher Job Fair, Jan. 18

Since 2003, the Faculty’s well-deserved reputation for excellence and a high employment rate upon graduation has brought more than 30 school boards or educational organizations to its annual Teacher Job Fair.

This year, the Teacher Job Fair takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the University Hall Atrium.

Job Fair delegates are primarily Alberta school board representatives but there is also an international presence as well as a number of private schools.

Register for January’s Health Check for U session - 15 minute confidential, free screening includes cholesterol and blood sugar levels, blood pressure, height, weight, waist circumference and follow-up consultation. To register send an email to wellness@uleth.ca.

"Tomorrow Project" Cancer Screening program now operational in Lethbridge

The Tomorrow Project visits Lethbridge this month, giving local residents an opportunity to join the long-term research study into the causes of cancer.

The Tomorrow Project is a research initiative of Alberta Health Services, Cancer Care.

By 2013, researchers want to enrol 50,000 Albertans, ages 35 to 69, who have never had cancer.

People interested in joining the study are invited to a temporary study centre at Eagles Hall, 631 13 St. North, from Jan. 16 to 21.

Preferred Group Rates on Home and Auto Insurance

Preferred group rates on home and auto insurance are being offered to the U of L employee community by TD Insurance Meloche-Monnex, through an affiliation with the U of L Alumni Association.

The program has operated for a number of years with service to the U of L alumni group, but is now available to employees as well.  

Alumni Relations will not directly solicit employees about the TD Insurance Meloche-Monnex program, nor will they share information with TD Insurance Meloche-Monnex.

New website brings First Nations, Métis and Inuit histories, cultures and perspectives to classrooms

New online material will help teachers and students to better appreciate and understand the contributions of Alberta’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) peoples.

This information, Walking Together: First Nations, Métis and Inuit Perspectives in Curriculum, was developed by education experts, elders and respected knowledge keepers from FNMI peoples within the province.

Previews of the resource have received very positive reviews from FNMI contributors and community members, including faculty members and students at the University of Lethbridge. Get the full story here.

New Complex to Shape Future Campus Development: Town Hall, Jan. 18

The University of Lethbridge campus has undergone significant change over recent years with the addition of a number of prominent buildings – but the biggest project is yet to come.

A proposed 300,000 square foot complex that will transform the Faculty of Arts & Science in particular and the University as a whole is just now in the planning stages and one of the U of L’s newest employees, Chris Eagan, is at the forefront.

The University’s new executive director of Facilities looks at the $255 million project as an opportunity for the University to take a major step forward, one that will further define the U of L as a leading comprehensive research institution.

A Town Hall meeting to discuss the progress to date on the initiation phase of the new complex will be held Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. in C674

Fast FOIP Fact

Any personal information that is used by the university to make a decision that directly affects that individual must be retained for a minimum of one year (35(b)).

This includes applications for employment, even if the decision is “no.” After one year, it is retained according to the Records Management Retention Policy.
