Pin Oak 2015 Week II Day 1

Alfano and Pletcher Share Blues

Week II of the 70th Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, presented by Irish Day Farm, started today with blue ribbons and blue skies sharing the spotlight in Katy, Texas.

Professionals Jennifer Alfano, of Buffalo, New York, and Peter Pletcher, of Magnolia, Texas, took the lion's share of top calls in the Valobra Main Hunter Ring that featured the open hunter sections.

In the competitive 18-horse First Year Green Hunter section, Helen Lenahan's Me Again (pictured above) jumped to two blue ribbons over fences with Alfano in the irons. This was the first time the gray 7-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (by Cardento) has started out so strongly and consistently.

"He was great today. He’s still really green, so he’s been coming along in the First Years and has been getting better and better," said Alfano. "But today he went beautifully, and I was thrilled with him. He’s really stepping up to the plate now."

Pletcher and Susie Baker's Q (pictured right) swept the three classes in the Second Year Green section, and Baker also guided the elegant bay to two blues in today's Amateur-Owner Hunter section. All in all, Q won five of the six classes he contested.

Baker, of Argyle, Texas, is thrilled that Q, a 9-year-old warmblood (by Quite Easy I), has returned to the show ring so successfully after suffering an injury last year.

"He was out for five months. He got hurt right before Devon [in May] and was off all summer," she said  "We basically started him back right before Capital Challenge [in October], and he was a little green there. Then he won a First Year class at [The Pennsylvania National in] Harrisburg and got great ribbons in the Amateurs there. In Florida this winter, he came out of the gate with me super, with an 89 in the first class. It’s like, 'Wow! He feels like he’s growing up.'"

Baker said she really enjoys watching Pletcher, of PJP Farms, show Q and loves the picture the two create in the show ring.

"You can get mesmerized by his canter, and Peter’s done an amazing job since Day No 1," she said. "Q loves Peter and goes beautifully for him. He’s so cool, and I love to watch him ride him. In the Second Years, Q picked up that big beautiful canter and just loped around and jumped beautifully. I was thrilled with him."

Pletcher also picked up the sweep in the Green Conformation section, winning all four classes with Rancho De Los Arboles LLC's stallion Thanks For The Gold (right).

The 8-year-old Hanoverian (by All The Gold) remains consistent, having earned the Green Conformation Hunter Championship during Week 1.

Hellman Takes Two in the Amateur-Owners

Eleanor Hellman traveled from Petaluma, California, for the Pin Oak Charity Horse Shows and will take home lots of great memories as well as blue ribbons.

She guided Sabrina Hellman's Channing to both over fences class wins in the 3'3" Amateur-Owner, 18-35, section. Last week she was knocking on the door, just 1½ points from the championship and ½ point from the reserve.

"Today I’m getting closer, and I’m already better than I was last week, so that's great," she said with a smile.

Hellman and Channing, a 10-year-old Holsteiner stallion (by Colman), began their partnership last September. Hellman had been competing in the jumpers and equitation but missed the hunters.

"The last hunter I had, we only went up to 3’3”, and that’s where he was perfect," she said. "We sold him after that, and I was taking my equitation horse in the hunters. I was like, ‘I really want to ride a hunter again.' And so my parents were very nice to me, and they let me get him."

Hellman, 23, who trains with Hope and Ned Glynn of Sonoma Valley Stables, said "Tate" has really helped her make that step up in the Amateur-Owner Hunter section.

"He’s totally wonderful and has done so much for me," she said. "There’s something about the A-O hunters. The 3’3” is sort of intimidating to me, and the 3’6” is really intimidating! That’s what’s so nice about him--he makes me feel really confident going over anything. He’s like, ‘Whatever! I’ve got it!’ He’s awesome."

Hellman's future goal includes developing a breeding business in Petaluma where she can raise young horses. She already has several foals on the ground and may breed Channing on a limited basis. She would like to see his genes passed on to the next generation, especially his phenomenal personality.

"He’s a stallion, but he’s just about the sweetest horse I’ve ever met," she said. "I’m certain the babies from him will be wonderful. He's just the best."

Take 2 Thoroughbred Jumpers

In today's Take 2 Thoroughbred Jumper class, Corey Diener's Oberlin jumped to victory with rider Isabella Angeletti. Caitlyn Epperson guided her own Au Girl to second place, and Sarah Invicta Williams piloted Montana to third for Invicta Farms, Inc.

Tomorrow's featured jumper event is the $10,000 Pin Oak Welcome Stake, scheduled to start in the late afternoon.
