Research Update

Good morning,

Linked below is the October 2018 Domestic Tax Paid Estimate. Below find a few key points provided by our Chief Economist, Michael Uhrich:

  • Domestic beer shipment volume decreased by 2.9% during October 2018, which had one more selling day than October 2017.  October’s selling day adjusted domestic beers shipment trend was minus 7.1%.
  • October’s performance brings the year-to-date trend to minus 2.1% and the latest 12 month trend to minus 2.5%.
  • Many distributors had above average inventory levels heading into October in anticipation of the fall price increase, which hit later in the year than it had in 2017 in some parts of the country.
  • Additionally, many distributors built up inventories in September to avoid potential shortages from planned changes to supply chain systems, further deflating October’s shipment performance.
