1.  Geoff Vogt's summary

Like free wine? Answer our quiz for your chance to win.

We are hoping to restore ILF face to face activities soon, subject to COVID-19 restrictions. See coming events below.

How about some retail therapy. This month you can get the energy to find a treasure with Gelista icecream, get the equipment to find treasure with Minelab, get a beautiful beverage to celebrate your treasure find from Wirra Wirra and get some IT advice from Blue Crystal to ensure the investments you acquire with your treasure are properly managed. Looking to buy a CBD property or for a finance guru to add to your team?
Look in Section 3.

You will read about the ILF awards night and have an opportunity to experience a soldier's life (the exciting bits). Darren Turner tells how MiniJumbuk adapted over the last six months and there are links to stories of amazing Scholar achievements. Also we have advance notice of a questionnaire which will provide us all with feedback about the ways we are coping with COVID-19.

2.  Scholar Questionnaire

The ILF believes you, its Scholars, are amongst the top business leaders in SA. Your responses to the current crisis have been amazingly good. In order to learn from all of you and we are inviting you to respond to a short 8 minute survey. If we can collate the views of the elite business leaders who are ILF scholars then we can send to each responder a valuable, thought provoking picture of these actions.

The Questionnaire has been drafted by Darren Turner (ILF2015) and David Evans (ILF2018) with input from Geoff Vogt and Mark Canny.

We have kept it deliberately short. It will hit your inbox by early next week. Please participate; the value to everyone depends upon the number of responses we get.

3.  Promote your product or service to other Scholars

In the interests of supporting fellow South Australian businesses, it has been decided that Scholars will be permitted to promote their products to fellow Scholars in the Bulletin from the July edition.

New entries will need to be lodged by 5 pm Wednesday 26 August and must be no more than 50 words. The entry can be repeated upon request for one further month without modification. After that a fresh edited or new entry will be required. Links to your website can be included. Special offers for Scholars only are encouraged.

7.  Darren Turner - How the Industry Leaders Fund helped me manage our business successfully through the pandemic.

Just over three months ago, our national retail customers including department stores and specialty homewares chains closed their stores around Australia and we were heading into a full lockdown Australia wide.  We transitioned to a three-day working week prior to Easter, but with a strong digital presence amongst our national retailers, April sales were better than we predicted only dropping by 50% on original forecast.

By the end of May sales had recovered to budget and both June and now July are record months across our business including wholesale to retail, online and our own retail shops in SA.  Forecast sales for FY 2021 are up by 20% as are our employment numbers with over ten new employees joining the business in June.

There are four key touch points that have influenced our success all relating back to my ILF experiences and I would like to share with you how they played a key role in preparing me and our business, MiniJumbuk for a COVID-19 crisis.

Like many of us, I was fortunate that Geoff Vogt approached me introducing the ILF and in 2015 -16 I attended the GLOBAL CEO PROGRAM, thanks to an ILF scholarship.  I learned many lessons from attending that course over the three weeks - three months apart in three different countries.  The case studies combined with world class teachings opened my eyes, but I gained even more by interacting and learning from other CEOs.  Two key learnings I took away were strong leadership through crisis and change, plus the importance of strengthening your people at Board and Senior Management level.

It took some time, but I eventually convinced my partners in late 2019 to bring in a new shareholder and COO with global experience and he joined the Business in February.  This played a key role almost immediately and provided the additional support and management skills the business needed.

The ILF Scholars network provides training and networking events throughout the year exclusively for Scholars and I have been fortunate to be part of and currently chair the committee, that helps organise these events.
