SDS Pumps and Treatment Plant are Full Speed Ahead
Two of the largest components for the Southern Delivery System (SDS) project are making significant progress. See video on construction progress.
Work is underway on the raw water storage tank, wall panels and masonry. It is estimated to be ready for water by fall 2015. A redesign of the Water Treatment Plant allowed costs to be reduced by about $70 million.
The 82,000 square-foot plant is an advanced water treatment facility that will use ozone/biological filtration to treat water piped from Pueblo Reservoir. The 100-acre facility will also house a 10-million-gallon raw-water storage tank, a 7-million-gallon treated-water storage tank and a finished-water pump station. Initially the plant will be able to treat 50 million gallons of water per day and can be expanded to treat up to 130 million gallons of water per day based on future customer demand.
Two hundred ninety people are working on the water treatment plant and pump stations alone. To date, more than 330 Colorado companies have helped plan and build SDS, with more than 50 percent of the support coming from El Paso, Pueblo, and Fremont counties. About $340 million to date has benefitted the Colorado economy. |
