May Brings "Kitten Season"

Hi again everyone... it's almost summer, the days are warming up and the kittens are coming! I know there are lots of folks looking forward to adopting a little one (what is cuter than a little kitten?) but this also brings about a very sad situation. The shelters fill up... even all of the little ones can't possibly be placed and the adult kitties pay the price.

We will certainly see our share of kittens, and we love helping them too! But, our hearts continue to be pulled to the adult cats. Now is when they need us most, there is no room for them in the shelters. Even the 1-2 yr old cats are in jeopardy -- the more senior cats don't have a chance.

If you can possibly help with foster care OR if you have been considering adding a new family member, now is the perfect time! We have wonderful adult kitties looking for new homes who would love to meet you! And if we don't have the right match, try the local shelters -- they all deserve a break!

This Mewsletter features some of our adult cats looking for homes... they are all sweet, loving and deserving of a second chance... and their adoption makes room for someone else to come into the program.

We do have kittens coming as well and that raises a financial concern. Kittens cost us about $300-400 each for tests, spay/neuter, vaccines and microchips. So when we hear about a litter of 3 or 4 kittens, we immediately start trying to figure out how to make it work. Your donations are appreciated, and all the money goes for the care of the cats. There is donation info on our website www.ascscats.org as well as a Paypal link!!

Thanks, as always, for your continued support ... and keep those stories coming about your adopted kitties -- we love hearing them!

And speaking of those stories... Jen, who adopted 12 yr Lovey in March, wrote: "Lovey is doing really well, she plays alot, purrs readily and seems happy. She has recently been exploring a kitty tower, although her favorite toys are a ball of yarn, a paper bag and feathers on a stick. She says hi to all at the ASCS!"

... and here are some pictures of Max with his new girlfriend Anna

and Bobby and Cooper relaxing in their new home!!

I Did It, I Did It!! I GOT A HOME!!

Yes, that's right... after months of searching Truman found his forever home! Actually, he just had to click his heels to realize he was already home! "There's no place like home!" Foster mom and dad (Sam and Tom) decided they couldn't let him go!! We think Truman worked that just right!!

Meet BlackJack and Sesame

BlackJack is a black, medium haired kitty. He is 4yrs old and just beautiful with his fluffy coat and big beautiful eyes! He is in foster care in the East Bay, so it is difficult for him to make our adoption events and even harder to find that forever home. He is up for making the trip to Marin if you would like to meet him! We would welcome a foster home (if you can't adopt!) as well!!

See lots and lots more photos of BlackJack in his slideshow! picasaweb.google.com/ascscats/BlackJack#slideshow

Sesame is a gorgeous tuxedo fella about 8 years old. Sesame's family travels too much now to be able to give him the time and attention that he deserves. He has always been and indoor/outdoor kitty -- but lately he has been indoors in a foster home doing just fine. He has an outdoor enclosure, which allows him the opportunity to be safely outside everyday. We can give info on that if you'd like!! Sesame would do best in an adult home with no tiny toddlers.

Meet Liza and Leo

Liza is a darling little tuxedo girl with a medium coat and big fluffy tail! She is full of spunk and purrsonality. Liza gets along famously with her foster sibblings -- but she does take time to adjust to other kitties (patience required!!) -- but well worth the effort... she is a little doll!! Liza is about 2 yrs old.

See lots and lots more photos of Liza in her slideshow! picasaweb.google.com/ascscats/Liza#slideshow

Leo is such a charming little guy! He is only about 3 1/2 years old and already he has had quite a life. Rescued from a hoarding situation, he came to ASCS about a year ago. He is a beautiful tabby and white boy. He has a funny crimped ear (from a past hematoma) and one of his eyes is a bit cloudy (though he sees just fine). We think this just makes him all the more handsome!

Leo has a wonderful personality -- he is so loving and sweet. He loves a lap, lots of hugs and pets! He is like a little dog that follows you around. Leo is also good with other kitties.

So, you're wondering why he hasn't been adopted! Well, Leo has tested positive for FIV (also known as kitty aids). It's an unfair stigma, because he is healthy and can live a normal healthy life. FIV is transmitted only by a severe bite or mating -- and only to other cats (not dogs, kids, you or me!) It is suggested that FIV kitties are adopted as an only cat (or with other FIV kitties). I also believe that Leo would be ok with a nice little dog!

We are happy to give you more info on FIV if you are interested in adopting our Leo... he is really special and he deserves a loving home!

See lots and lots more photos of Leo in his slideshow! picasaweb.google.com/ascscats/Leo#slideshow

Spunky Seniors Looking for a Home!

Meet Panda, Papi, Tino and Max ...

Panda is 10. This sweet little tuxedo girl lost her human companion to cancer. She is a gentle, loving kitty and ok with other nice cats. Panda is on a special diet and needs a medication for some mouth issues (but it's pretty simple and not an expensive medication).

Panda's Slideshow

Papi is also 10 years old. He is just about the cutest, sweetest tabby boy ever (and I love those tabbies!). His family loves him dearly, but allergies are forcing this issue. Papi would make a lovely companion in a quiet home.

Papi's Slideshow

Tino is about 12. What a handsome gent he is! Tino's mom became too ill to care for him and he is hoping for a bit of that gold at the end of the rainbow!!

Tino's Slideshow

Max is a darling 12 yr Burmese boy.  His dad passed away, and his elderly mom is not able to take care of him.  Max is currently in foster care in the central valley and we are looking for a spot for him here in Marin.  (Foster care would be welcome, too!)

Still Looking! The Muppet Brothers: Bert, Ernie and Elmo!

Those of you who have known us for awhile know that we have some cats in our care that have never been 'adoptable'. Unfortunately, circumstances have changed and they may lose their living situation. The first 3 kitties we are asking for help with are Bert, Ernie and Elmo. Years ago, I fed their mother in a feral colony. They were kittens then -- we trapped them and had them neutered, vaccinated, etc... They are now 5 yrs old. Bert is a buff and white tabby.  Ernie and Elmo are grey tabbies.  Although they have always lived indoors, know the daily routine, love their wet food and nightly treats, we can still not pet them. Bert and Ernie sleep together -- Elmo is part of the gang, but definitely the shyer of the three. I would love for them to have a place together, at least Bert and Ernie. They are feral, but not barn cats -- they have lived a cozy life indoors. If you have a situation where they could be comfortable, well, that would make them (and us) so happy!!! They are super cute, sweet and have fun personalities (just like the muppets!!)

We Need Foster Care (DESPERATELY!)

Kitten season is coming fast!  We need foster care for them, but also (and mostly) for the adult cats that are pushed out of already overcrowded shelters at this time of year.  Euthanasia rates soar and we are called to help.  Unfortunately, we need to have a spot for them before we can say yes...   If you have a little room and a bit of TLC, it could save a life!!

ASCS will take care of their medical expenses, as well as food, litter, toys and beds.

Our humans are a diverse group of Not So Crazy Cat People. They have careers that range from service to professional, retailer, graphic designer, author, program manager, software developer, business owner, dancer, teacher, veterinarian. They are fully employed, have fulfilling personal and professional lives, are passionate about rescuing animals and they find the time and balance to help ASCS Cats. Get to know them and you will see, maybe you are a Not So Crazy Cat Person too? Is there some special gift or skill you possess that could help? Got a little time to foster a kitty, or two? Maybe come and hang out at adoption day and give us kitties head rubs, belly rubs, love... and treats work, too! We’ll purr if you do!!!

Purrs and biscuits to our wonderful volunteers and foster parents:
Marin: Cheryl Beauvais & Tom Montgomery, Sam Bradshaw & Tom Paderna, Ron Capasso, Tripti Noorani and her wonderful family (Ajmal, Sasha, Tina, Arman), Robyn Piper, Heather Rhine, Susan Shea, Becca Martinson and her lovely family
Sacramento: Mary Bruck, Kim Koski, Rosemary Lamb, Chris Levine, Georgann Eberhardt

Mrrrow-meow (that’s thanks) to these Marin businesses for their support!

And a special thanks to Purina for their generous donation of food to feed the kitties while in our care!
