Kinesiology Tape :: What Is It & How Does It Work?
|
|
|
By: Jim Quisenberry
Student PTA, Lane Community College
Did you notice all that colored tape that the athletes were wearing at the London Olympics? Were you wondering what all that fancy colored tape was? It is a product called Kinesio Tape and it is not just for high level athletes. Let’s take a quick look at how it came to be, what it is used for, and how it works. Maybe Kinesio Tape is something that can benefit you.
How It Came To Be
A brief history about the development and design of Kinesio Tape is in order. Dissatisfied with existing tapes, chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase invented Kinesio Tex Tape and the Kinesio Taping method in Japan in 1979 (it came to the U.S. in the mid-90’s) to offer his patients a ‘prescription’ that was effective between office visits. Dr. Kase spent countless hours experimenting to design a tape and adhesive that had a thickness and weight similar to skin. The tape he designed is 100% cotton and is stretchable up to about 50% of its original length. The adhesive used is 100% medical grade, acrylic, contains no medicine, is heat activated, has a wavelike pattern that mimics a fingerprint and allows the skin to breath.
What It Is Used For
The list of conditions for which Kinesio Tape is used is very extensive. Here at Therapeutic Associates Physical Therapy at The Athletic Club of Bend we have used Kinesio Tape for treatment of:
-
Golfer’s elbow
-
Achilles tendonitis
-
Patellofemoral pain syndrome
-
Tennis elbow
-
Rotator cuff impingement/ tendonitis
-
Low back pain
-
Hip bursitis
-
Whiplash
-
Plantar fasciitis
-
Postural dysfunction
-
IT band syndrome
-
Piriformis syndrome
-
Muscle imbalances
-
Scapular winging
These are just a few of the conditions that we have treated and we are continually exploring new ideas. As over 85% of Kinesio Tex Tape applications are for non-athletes, there is a good chance that YOU may benefit from Kinesio Tape.
How It Works
The big picture is the tape microscopically lifts the skin and allows the circulatory and lymphatic systems to move blood and lymph more effectively, allowing the body to be more efficient in its own natural healing process. What the tape ultimately accomplishes depends on the direction and amount of stretch applied to the tape. Different techniques applying Kinesio Tape can reduce pain, promote healing, encourage strengthening, decrease swelling, promote correct posture, and facilitate proper joint motions.
