Summer construction schedule still busy but scaled back

This summer, the University of Lethbridge’s busy construction schedule will once again move forward, but not with the scope that was anticipated prior to the Mar. 7 provincial budget announcements.

The schedule has been altered in recent weeks in light of cuts made by the provincial government to the University’s Campus Alberta operating grant, with projects slated to draw funding from the University’s general operating funds suspended until further notice.

Only those projects with funding specifically received under the Infrastructure Maintenance Program (IMP), or other restricted capital grants, will continue as previously scheduled. Learn more here.

For continuing updates on Facilities projects, please visit their website.

Manwar Khan (BSc ’07) looks to put stop to bullying

A harrowing incident on an Edmonton LRT train in December 2012 that left one man dead has sparked a grassroots movement to put an end to bullying.

University of Lethbridge alumnus Manwar Khan (BSc ’07) witnessed the savage attack and tried desperately to stop the assault. But with bystanders intimidated and feeling powerless against the attacker, the beating continued.

“Since that day, I have been haunted by that incident,” says Khan, a 37-year-old IT professional with Alberta Human Services. “Even when I go to bed, I think about this. When I’m in the LRT I think about it. What if I could go back to that day, what could I try differently? I can either sit here and hope that this will pass, or I can stand up and help other people by raising awareness among them to speak up against bullying. I want bullying to be stopped – period.”

Khan is organizing a rally in Calgary in May, and will be in Lethbridge in June. Details of  the June  activity are not yet finalized but will be promoted when they are complete. Learn more here.

Traditional culture reduces prescription and illicit drug problems for urban Aboriginals

A new study by a University of Lethbridge researcher has found that urban Aboriginal adults who embrace traditional culture are less likely to experience drug problems.

Dr. Cheryl Currie, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge, collected data from almost 400 Edmonton-based Aboriginal Canadians.

The study results, recently published in the journal Social Science & Medicine, suggest Aboriginal cultural practice is associated with reduced prescription and illicit drug problems for urban Aboriginal adults. Learn more here
