Technology can be a great resource in classrooms. The danger is that mobile learning apps are developed without taking into account the issue of languages, particularly the home language of pupils. Mmaki Jantjies set out to explore the relationship between the two after some schools started using a code-switching science and maths app she’d designed that allowed pupils to switch between languages. Her findings show that this had a
remarkably positive effect.
China and Kenya are trade partners. But recent examples of alleged racism towards Kenyans at the hands of Chinese employers suggest it’s not always a comfortable relationship. Juliet Okoth says it’s time Kenya consistently used its laws to tackle racial discrimination.
