Foreclosure Fixes Gain Traction

A pair of foreclosure bills has some major momentum in the Oregon Senate. The week started off with a bright and early hearing Monday that drew a packed room of homeowners from across the state, bravely telling their stories of bank mistreatment with dire consequences. Legislators also joined in the call to action, with a bipartisan group of lawmakers testifying in support of SB 1552 and SB 1564. See a quick recap of the emotionally-charged hearing here:

The next step is for the bill to be voted out of committee, which we hope will happen by late this week or early next. Although we have the support of the public and have been getting great coverage from the press (check out the many headlines the hearing generated here), every day that passes is another opportunity for banking lobbyists to try and convince lawmakers that the foreclosure crisis doesn’t require any action.

Don’t let the industry that created this mess dictate how it should be cleaned up! Take action by calling your legislators at 1.800.332.2313 and urging them to support SB 1552 and SB 1564. After you do so, please let us know how your calls went!

Another bill under consideration would require businesses to disclose how much money they make off state contracts. Inspired by the successful effort to overhaul Oregon’s ReliaCard contract, HB 4133 would offer transparency where there currently is none. The bill had its first hearing this afternoon in the House.
