Karen Diller has been named library director. She formerly served as associate library director and begins in her new role July 1. After conducting a national search, Karen emerged as the best candidate receiving strong support from the search committee, library staff and WSU Pullman Dean of Libraries, Jay Starratt. Karen completed her Ph.D. in library and information science at Emporia State University in 2014. Her dissertation was titled, “Restorative Library Study Spaces.”
Nicole Campbell, who served as interim library director for four years, will return to her former position as head of reference and electronic services.
Memorial planned for Tom Gazzola
2 p.m. July 5
Portland Doubletree Hotel
1000 NE Multnomah Street, Portland, OR
The campus community—faculty, staff and students—is invited to attend a memorial service to honor Tom Gazzola, math instructor in the College of Arts and Sciences. Tom died June 10 from injuries sustained when he was hit by a car while jogging in his neighborhood. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation in Tom's memory to the ALS Association of Oregon and Southwest Washington. Tom and his family participated annually in the "Walk to Defeat ALS" in memory of his father, and in honor of his wife, Dr. Kimberly Goslin, who cares for ALS patients.

“Boredom is extremely common,” Bill Griesar tells me, a behavioural neuroscientist of Washington State University Vancouver. “And it's found across cultures, so the pervasive nature of this experience suggests that it serves some critical role in behaviour.”
Washington State University Vancouver will host an A-Z of Financial Aid and Scholarship workshop at 1 p.m. June 13 at the Vancouver Community Library for all prospective college students, no matter the college they choose.
The National Park Service partners with Portland State University and Washington State University Vancouver in the annual session, which gives college students some hands-on experience in archaeology. It also gives members of the public a chance to observe the careful excavations, the precise record-keeping and the preservation of artifacts involved in an actual archaeological project.
