A beluga whale discovered in Norwegian waters is suspected to have been trained by Russian intelligence forces. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time: Gervase Phillips explains that marine mammals – including dolphins, porpoises, sea lions, orcas, belugas and pilot whales – have been exploited by rival militaries since way back in the 1960s, as they attempt to get the edge in the underwater arms race.

Early screening for breast cancer relies on the skills and experience of specially trained radiologists and radiographers. But as the number of these experts declines, researchers have begun looking into how artificial intelligence can help diagnose this disease, with some extremely promising results. In fact, as Helen Yule explains, some of these AI systems are now as accurate in their cancer detection as their human counterparts.
