Election survey

AFAO has received responses to our 2016 Federal Election Survey from the major parties which make us confident that there is continuing bipartisan support for ending HIV transmission.

'We are buoyed by each party's willingness to commit to actual policy outcomes, and their preparedness to develop meaningful and constructive policies,’ says AFAO CEO Darryl O’Donnell.

Changes at AFAO

On Thursday 30 June we’ll sadly be saying goodbye to nine AFAO colleagues. Due to funding changes, AFAO has had to restructure and as a result we will be a much smaller organisation in 2016/17. You can leave messages on our Facebook page

New campaign: Together for Better

Togetherforbetter.org.au is an online resource for gay men about serodiscordant relationships.

It provides information about HIV and relationships and uses attractive imagery to challenge stigmatising assumptions some gay men may have about these relationships.

Report back: UN High Level Meeting on AIDS

On 8 June, United Nations members formally adopted the 2016 Declaration to End AIDS at a High Level Meeting on Ending AIDS (HLM) in New York.

The Declaration, which outlines key issues and sets targets, including an ambitious goal to get 30 million people on treatment by 2020, will guide the global response to HIV for the next five years.

SHIFT program approved for grant-making phase

AFAO is pleased to announce a new regional HIV program, which will bolster the community response to HIV in a range of countries across Asia.

The Sustainable HIV Financing in Transition (SHIFT) regional program, a collaboration of AFAO, APCASO and APCOM, will start in early 2017.

HIV & Mobility forum

On 30 May, over 60 people from 38 organisations, including services, networks and research bodies from the HIV and multicultural health sectors, met in Sydney to discuss the health promotion needs of people from mobile populations at a national forum hosted by AFAO.

Discussions at the forum canvassed a range of issues, and resulted in a number of recommendations for best practice health promotion and advocacy.

PrEP can help us end HIV

ON 6 May, Truvada was approved for use as HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). 

Our CEO Darryl O’Donnell welcomed the news, which was announced the same day that HIV prevention experts from around the country met at the National Forum on HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis.
