Five years on from announcing its intention to build an all-in-one digital ID service for Australia, the Federal Government is still plugging away at the initiative. And to be fair, there are now more than 1.7 million digital identities created through myGovID. eftpos jumped in on the act earlier this year with its trial with Australia Post of its connectID offering. Now the Queensland Government is also piloting the eftpos solution which acts as a broker between identity providers such as Australia Post, government departments and merchants, who need to verify who they are dealing with. It’s yet another weapon in the arsenal and could ultimately provide some compelling use cases (particularly with eftpos’ acquisition of payments app Beem It) and a move away from clumsy digital commerce experiences.
