Dear colleagues,

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness month. All three free-access papers in this month’s Endoscopy report on approaches that might reduce both the burden of patient morbidity and the financial costs related to combating this cancer. These studies find that artificial intelligence performs better than guideline criteria in accurately identifying patients with pT1 disease who do not need to go on to further surgery, that a notable proportion of patients would be prepared to defer resection of diminutive polyps, and that piecemeal cold snare resection of large sessile serrated polyps is safe and effective, avoiding the risks of electrocautery.

Scroll down for links to these free papers and to this month’s contents, as well as to the video specials from the free E-Video Library.

Sincerely yours,
Peter D. Siersema

Artificial intelligence may help in predicting the need for additional surgery after endoscopic resection of T1 colorectal cancer

Katsuro Ichimasa, Shin-ei Kudo, Yuichi Mori et al.

This study shows that, compared with several international guidelines, artificial intelligence technology may help to reduce unnecessary additional surgery in patients with pT1 colorectal cancer without missing any lymph node metastases. Read more

Patients’ willingness to defer resection of diminutive polyps: results of a multicenter survey

Daniel von Renteln, Mickael Bouin, Alan N. Barkun et al.

Deferring resection of diminutive colorectal polyps is a potentially attractive means of reducing colonoscopy costs and complications, and of enhancing efficiency. By means of a survey, the authors evaluated patients’ willingness to embrace this strategy. They found that more than 50% of respondents would be willing to participate in a trial in which resection of diminutive polyps would be deferred until the next surveillance colonoscopy. Read more

Wide-field piecemeal cold snare polypectomy of large sessile serrated polyps without a submucosal injection is safe

David J. Tate, Halim Awadie, Farzan F. Bahin et al.

This small study reports that piecemeal cold snare polypectomy of large sessile serrated polyps (SSPs) is safe and effective with no recurrences after 6 months. If confirmed in larger studies, the “cold” technique may become the standard for removing SSPs.  Read more
