Draft Resource Strategy now open for consultation until
20 September

In the June edition of the Regulator's Update we let you know that MBIE is developing a draft Resource Strategy for minerals and petroleum in New Zealand. The draft Strategy: Responsibly Delivering Value – A Minerals and Petroleum Resource Strategy for Aotearoa New Zealand: 2019-2029, is now open for public consultation.

The Strategy supports the transition to a carbon neutral economy by 2050 and aims to provide certainty to the minerals and petroleum sector on the Government's long term vision for the sector.

The Strategy clearly articulates that the transition to a carbon neutral economy needs minerals to manufacture our clean technology solutions, such as solar panels and wind turbines. And a productive, sustainable and inclusive economy can only be realised if we have an affordable, sustainable and secure supply of resources, such as aggregate and steel for development of our infrastructure and our homes.

Our Treaty partners, industry representatives and other interested parties were involved in the development of the Strategy.

The Strategy will be used to inform a review of the Crown Minerals Act 1991 to make sure it is fit for purpose to meet the needs of all New Zealanders.

Read our media release for the Strategy.

How to have your say

The draft Strategy and information about how to have your say can be found on the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Have your say page. We encourage you and anyone else interested to have your say on the draft Strategy by the deadline of 20 September 2019.
