RESOURCE Women & Negotiation: Narrowing the Gender Gap in Negotiation Harvard Law School have published a blog post on the strategies for narrowing the gender gap in negotiation, with particular reference to salary. The article includes the reasoning behind such gender gaps and details on successful negotiation techniques to combat the gap. WATCH The Secret Barrister: Justice in a Pandemic Mini Series- Channel 4 Award winning novelist, The Secret Barrister brings a 4-part mini series with Channel 4 News, highlighting the current issues within the UK jurisdiction. This weeks episode shines light on how Covid-19 has affected the already struggling system. Barristers facing bankruptcy, cases being scraped and the mooting of the idea of scrapping juries. Along with assessing the overarching question of how this will disproportionately affect minority groups. MENTOR OPPORTUNITY FOR UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPSSix of the countries leading commercial law chambers, have combined to create a mentor scheme for hopeful barristers from underrepresented groups. Chambers partaking are: Brick Court, Fountain Court, Essex Court, One Essex Court, Blackstone and Three Verulam Buildings. The mentor scheme, aims to support and encourage individuals from groups whom are underrepresented at the Bar of England and Wales (and in particular the commercial bar) to pursue careers as barristers. Those underrepresented groups include women; people from minority ethnic backgrounds; people with disabilities; LGBT+ people; people who spent time in care; and people from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. The scheme will run between November 2020 and June 2021, with applications closing 2nd October 2020. The legalities in question are: was there sufficient evidence for belief of imminent breach of the peace, why were those caught in the kettling required to give their personal details before leaving the crowd and in the midst of a pandemic, protesters were told to remove their face coverings in the large crowds so facial recognition technology could be used. Depp libel trial shines light on problems of proof in domestic violence cases The Guardian When two people give opposing accounts of private events, even top legal teams struggle to establish truth. The trial has also been described more criminal rather than civil proceedings, even drafting in barristers with expertise in criminal law cases.
