Newsletter - Friday 23rd October 2015

There has certainly been a lot happening in the Redlands thanks to our focus to bring events to the City.  We have just experienced the 'City Slider', 'Relish' food festival, and 4wd Caravan & Camping show.  These and other events have been enjoyed by about 50,000 people this year and inject around $6.5million into our local economy.

There are more events to come from now until the end of the year, including Diner en Rouge, Retro Eat Boutique Markets, Redlands Rockabilly Revival and Christmas by Starlight.

A list of What's On & Events is on Council's website.

Diner en Rouge - Mayor's Domestic Violence Fundraiser

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend my second annual Dîner en Rouge Mayor’s fundraiser for Redlanders affected by domestic and family violence.

Last year’s inaugural fundraiser was very well received by more than 200 guests from all levels of government, business, community groups and the general public. More than $10,000 was raised at the event, which importantly started vital community conversations about a serious social issue that often remains secret.

Redland City Council is proud to be working with Zonta clubs, Soroptimist International, Rotary Club of Cleveland and local domestic and family violence service advocates on this year’s Dîner en Rouge event, to be held from 5pm on Saturday 14 November 2015.

The location of Dîner en Rouge will remain a secret until guests arrive at a designated meeting place in Cleveland. The formal event will have a red and white theme. Red is for Redlands and white is to acknowledge the national campaign to stop violence against women, White Ribbon Day (held on 25 November 2015).

I’m pleased to announce that Jonty Bush, Young Australian of the Year 2009 has been confirmed as a guest speaker, with more names to be released soon.

All proceeds from Dîner en Rouge will go towards supporting an application for housing for Redlanders affected by domestic and family violence.

I look forward to you joining me at Dîner en Rouge to help continue these important community conversations and give a voice to those who need it most.

Transport Forums

In my recent city-wide survey, traffic congestion was voted as the number 1 issue for Redlanders.  Council has listened and now invites you to a series of traffic forums to be held across the City.

This is timely as our Draft City Plan 2015 is currently with residents for their input, and both the State Government through its review of the State Infrastructure Plan, and the Federal Government, have recently brought the need for transport infrastructure planning to the fore.

As part of the State Government’s review, it has encouraged local government to engage with communities and Redland City will be among the first to do so through a conversation which will inform a priority infrastructure plan to be developed next year.

You may recall that I initiated the very first cross boundary transport working group.  As a result, Council is now working with Brisbane City Council, the State Government and the Federal Government to address connectivity from Redlands to Brisbane.  This project has strong benefits for both cities.  Brisbane is the commuting destination for many Redland residents and strong transport links between Redlands and Brisbane are important to the economic growth of Brisbane.

Through our Economic Development Framework Redland City Council has identified local economic growth as a priority and inadequate infrastructure as a major threat to that priority.

That is why I need your input at these forums.  Please click on the 'Join the conversation' image to find out more.

Thank you

In closing, thank you for your support so far during this term of Council, and I look forward to maintaining that support into the future as I deliver on my commitments.

Don't forget to 'Have your say' on the City’s future by viewing the Draft Redland City Plan 2015.  This includes the proposed 'rezoning' of surplus land.  Submissions close on 27 November and can be made here.

I encourage you to stay informed via my Website, Facebook or Twitter, and don't hesitate to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns.  Feel free to pass on this information to anyone else who has an interest in the Redlands.
