Celebrating the Lunar New Year at CPC The Year of the Pig has already proved to be a time of generosity and good fortune. In the last month, seniors of Open Door were invited to perform at the NYC Council Lunar New Year Celebration and also performed at a combination Valentine's Day/New Year event at the center, members of CPC Brooklyn's dance team performed at the inauguration for NY State Senator Zellnor Myrie, and Brooklyn Community Services hosted a celebration of culture, tradition, family, and heritage at P.S. 310. Finally, on the last day of February, CPC held it's most successful gala event ever. Thank you to all who were able to join us in these events, either in person or in spirit! CPC Hosts 'Instant Decision Day' in Collaboration with the University at BuffaloThe results were overwhelmingly positive. 83% of the attendees either received a non-binding offer of admission to UB, or a conditional acceptance into the university’s Educational Opportunity Program. CPC's Intern and Earn Program Hosts Successful Career PanelOn Wednesday, February 6th, CPC's Intern and Earn program hosted a career panel for participants from our 23rd cohort. Panelists included professionals spanning government, law enforcement, finance, and health care. Judy Ah-Yune Writes On Challenges Facing Immigrants CPC Manhattan Community Services Director, Judy Ah-Yune, wrote a compelling article on the importance of social work and the creation of safe spaces during today's challenging political climate. Robin Hood Foundation Sees Community Impact at CPC Queens Community Center On February 27, 2019, Wes Moore and Robin Hood staff visited the CPC Queens Community Center to see first-hand what impacts CPC's Family Support and Economic & Community Empowerment programs have on our community. Carlyn Cowen Discusses Health Care with Assembly Member Gottfried on Capitol TonightCPC's Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer Carlyn Cowen joined Assembly Member Richard Gottfried on February 11th on Capitol Tonight, a political news program in Albany to discuss health care legislation. Project Gateway: SAT Recruiting! Project Gateway will be offering a low-cost, high quality SAT prep program that prepares students for the Critical Math and Critical Reading/Writing components of the SAT exam. Starting March 30, 2019, the class will meet once a week on Saturdays from 11 AM to 4 PM for nine weeks. Service Learning Initiative Visits Princeton University On February 18th, community members from CPC's Service Learning Initiative toured Princeton University. Youth were excited about visiting an ivy league school and one of the premier universities in the country. Beacon Program Director Graduates from PASE's Emerging Leaders Program Last month, CPC Beacon Program Director Fatima Balancier graduated from the Partnership for After School Education's (PASE) Emerging Leaders in Nonprofit Management program. Fatima's capstone focused on the impact of funding policies on NYC community-based organizations. Sumon Chin, Gia Mui, and Po-Ling Ng Recognized by Women in Human Services Hall of Fame CPC's Sumon Chin, Director of Asian Child Care Resource & Referral /Deputy Director, Manhattan Community Services, Gia Mui, Director of Multi-Social Services, and Po-Ling Ng, Director of Project Open Door Senior Center were recognized by the Women in Human Services Hall of Fame and honored during a ceremony in Albany on March 5th. Child Care Provider Appreciation EventThe event will be held at 11:00 A.M. on March 30th in the CPC Queens Community Center at 133-14 41st Avenue, Flushing, NY 11355, to celebrate the commitment to families and high quality child care by licensed child care providers. The event will have a raffle, information session, and offer a chance to network with other professionals in the child care field.
