The Paper Kites play Mojos Bar this Friday. Pick up a free double pass!

Runner launch two new singles this Friday at the Bakery. Check the tune Footprints while you're with us

Lyndon Blue reviews Tortoise, Xiu Xiu, Slugabed, Ikonika, Grails, Holy Sons, HTRK, Chris Cobilis, The Bank Holidays, James Ireland, Tenniscoats, New War, Puro Instinct, Alex Griffin & Mayor Dadi all from This Is Nowhere, which was on Sunday.

Amber Fresh spills her guts about love while giving big support to Kucka who won WAM's song of the year in the experimental category - nice one WAM, Kucka's amazing.

Also covered amongst a near infinite number of themes in the spectrum of Amber Fresh's view are Xiu Xiu at This Is Nowhere AND Mental Powers who launched their new album Pro Bono at Mojos Bar on Saturday.

Stalwart of the Theatre scene up to very recently Deckchair Theatre Company have closed their doors. Christopher Isaacs gives great respect to this altogether upsetting outcome. He speculates to some of the reasons they had to close - without pointing the finger.

The Paper Kites (VIC) play Mojos Bar this Friday, supported by Art Of Sleeping (QLD) & Battleships (NSW). The show, like all their tours, is selling well.

Thanks to your friend with connections : ) ... CPN offer a double pass to the first mailout reader to respond - HERE!

Tickets are available here if you miss out : )

Lyndon Blue: live reviews

THIS IS NOWHERE @ SOMERVILLE AUDITORIUM, SUNDAY OCTOBER 14

In the far distant future, the dimming sun flickers through its final millenia and the Earth is a wearied husk. We camp, wander, forage, across bleak dusty plains and lifeless scrub. ‘Cities’ and ‘nations’ are the stuff of myth; long-decayed, half-remembered. There is only the endless nothing, the yawning sky, the cold wind, and the strange horned demon-beasts that creep through the mountains like shadows. Nobody asks where we are, or where we are going. Everybody knows this is nowhere.

Dump 'Em Out (or Mental Powers at Mojos (unseen), Kucka at WAM Song of the Year, Tennis Coats and Xiu Xiu at This Is Nowhere)

that’s what the texans say
when they want you to, well
dump em out

see,

“em”‘s the lovely soft breasts under your shirt
the ones you’ve had since you were young
em ones you lovingly watched growing there
against your chest
part of you

chris isaacs: in the black box

deckchair closing their doors

Last week I learnt through various Facebook status updates the theatre company Deckchair had announced their closure. Citing the cultural and economic landscape as the reason for their closure, the board wrote in a letter to its patrons this “when combined with continuing restraints on funding levels across the three tiers of government, as well as rapidly changing audience behaviour unfortunately means the organisation’s future has become unsustainable.”

no lights no lycra

at the banks reserve pavilion, perth

A dance night based on abandoning self-consciousness and professionalism through no lights and no talking as you bust a move, NLNL has finally hit Perth after incarnations across the Eastern States.

Whilst flirting and showing off are moves that are sacrificed, what emerges is self-confidence invested within the purity of dancing as well as a killer work-out to boot. Not to mention the uplifting sight of a town hall filled with shadowy apparitions shifting shapes to Getting Jiggy With It.

diving for pearls

at subiaco arts centre, subiaco

The national tour of Katherine Thomson’s Diving for Pearls reaches Perth on 20 October for a one-night only performance of this historic, award-winning play. Hailed as “One of the ten best plays in the country” by Time Out magazine, Diving for Pearls is a stunning production about an Australian industrial community on the cusp of change.

Shy union member Den is trying to speak up against his factory’s threatened closure. His feisty girlfriend Barbara is on an often humorous journey to reinvent herself as a glossy hotel hostess. A secret daughter, righteous sister and pompous brother-in-law are set to tip the balance of their delicate relationship. What does the future hold for the couple and their community?

The cast is headed by Kevin Harrington (Neighbours, SeaChange, The Dish and Underbelly), who is shortly starring as Cliff Young in ABC telemovie Cliffy.

ONGOING theatre, exhibitions, aarrrght!

edge of centre

at heathcote museum & gallery, applecross

An exhibition by Anne Duff and Jane King.

Exhibition runs from Saturday, 29 September to Sunday, 4 November 2012.

Anne Duff and Jane King have explored the past life of a small corner shop on the city fringe. They peered through the keyhole to another time; when the world was bigger and slower, when old social networks were localised, like single, fragile spider webs stretching delicately out toward each other, connecting thinly, at random.

In this technological age it is no longer fantasy to be able to see through walls. New radar technology has been developed that will allow the viewer to peer through solid surfaces in real time with nothing more than a mobile phone.

the warrior and the princess

at the blue room theatre, northbridge

“Even a hunter cannot kill a bird which flies to him for refuge.”

Europe 1939, World War II begins. Jewish refugees flee when Poland falls to Germany. As the war progresses and the Allied forces strike back, the Soviet Union and Germany threaten to invade the refugees’ fragile safe haven in Lithuania. With borders closing, the refugees are desperate; their future looks dire whichever force may invade.

But in times of injustice, help sometimes comes from unexpected sources…

The Warrior and the Princess is a story of courage and the sacrifice of one for the lives of many. A unique reimagining of true events blends performance with shadow play, puppetry, and live piano accompaniment to recreate this little-known story of hope amidst the devastation of World War II.

“…each person must be judged on their character and nothing else.”

casey ayres: tunc

at ok gallery, northbridge

Exhibition runs: 18th October - 18th November 2012.

Tunc - a clipping from a Latin phrase meaning ‘then’ and a pointed anagram –continues Casey Ayres’ investigation into beauty and mythology, extending his photographic practice into a series of repurposed, sculptural ‘props’. Ayres’ draws an uneasy line between autobiography and fiction, altering and documenting his immediate surroundings as a set pursuant of a heightened, cinematic narrative following a decline into unwarranted violence and dangerous nostalgia.

ghosts

at the subiaco arts centre, subiaco

GHOSTS is a scathing commentary on 19th Century morality. Has morality changed since GHOSTS was first staged in 1882? Are people of today any different to the characters of this play? Back then, things like sexually transmitted diseases and euthanasia were definitely scandalous taboo topics! If contemporary critics of the time said things like: “...Morbid, unhealthy and disgusting... An open drain: a loathsome sore unbandaged... Nauseating and menacing... As foul and filthy a concoction as has ever been allowed to disgrace the boards of an English theatre...” then why would it be worth watching?

Well, it’s a little bit naughty... And because like any good theatre, this play has pithy writing and dramatic arc. Although it’s plot is simply that it examines a town's tribute to a prominent citizen and his widow's attempts to come to terms with the real truth of the man's life, it’s characters are layered with questions and fears and
desires that any person of today could relate to, one way or another. Under the direction of the well-experienced Stephen Lee, GHOSTS is sure to be an intriguing journey into questioning our own morality. And it’s a change from Shakespeare!
