News, views and analysis from the A/NZ tech sector No images? Click here Hi there, Despite the howling from privacy advocates, and concerns of weak security, Government-sponsored video surveillance is fast becoming the application du jour for IoT. It makes sense. Everyone likes it when video surveillance catches the bad guys, but no one is particularly enamoured to feeling under big brother's watch 24/7. IoT creates the potential to use the power of the data behind moving pictures when there is genuine cause, and ignore the stream of images and data the rest of the time. But it remains open to abuse where commercial gain might compromise ethical standards, or where footage might be re-purposed for something other than its legitimate intent, or simply be stolen. That risk has driven the Federal Government to mandate IoT standards, following nine months of voluntary compliance to a code of practice that, some say, could result in a star system that ranks off-the-shelf IoT devices on their compliance level. With IoT now seemingly in every electronic gadget, the move creates another source of tension in China-Australia relations that could have far-reaching implications.
