Issue 35
  1. An e-ink screen for your iPhone
  2. A beautiful, minimal note-taking app
  3. Smart, connected plugs
  4. Themes for OS X
  5. Wireless earbuds charged through a phone
  6. Google's note-taking app, now on iOS

Hey friends!

Yesterday I handed my laptop over to Apple Support so they can fix its deteriorating screen and dying battery. Even though my girlfriend's older laptop allows me to keep my inbox under control while the workhorse is getting a do-over, not having that two-kilo lump of metal by my side makes me feel embarrasingly naked.

In other news, I just opened up the Patronage program for the next issue of Offscreen (No13!). You can sign up here to make an extra contribution towards the next issue and get your name printed in the back. I've sold 6 out of the 25 slots available already. Your support means a lot!

If I may, can I remind everyone that if you appreciate these weekly emails, please do share them with your network on Twitter/Facebook or forward the email to friends/colleagues. (There is a shareable web-link at the bottom.) I'm still hopeful we can get that subscriber number to around 10,000 by the end of the year (we're close to 6,000 now). With your help we can get there, I'm sure!

Have a productive week!

Kai

This Weekʼs Line-Up

An e-ink screen for your iPhone
01

As much as I love reading on e-ink screens, I just disliked the UI/UX of my Kindle so much that I eventually sold it. This e-ink addition you can attach to the back of the iPhone definitely got my attention. It's on pre-order right now. I'll certainly keep an eye out for the first reviews...

A beautiful, minimal note-taking app
02

Wow, Letterspace looks gorgeous! I've been a loyal user of Simplenote, but if I ever change my note-taking app, I'll certainly give Letterspace a try!

Smart, connected plugs
03

Zuli sits between your power outlet and whatever device you're using at home or at the office that you want to control via your smartphone. It allows you to do things like dimming lights, turning things on based on proximity or a pre-defined schedule, keeping an eye on electricity usage and more. They are quite pricey still, but I can see how they could be handy, in particular in a shared office scenario.

Themes for OS X
04

I remember playing with colours, fonts and gradients in Windows XP – or was it 98? Flavours 2 reminds me of that era. If you want to add a personal, custom touch to your Mac, this little theming app is for you.

Wireless earbuds charged through a phone
05

I've always shied away from wireless earphones because the last thing I need is another gadget that requires charging. Pugz offers what seems like a well thought-through solution: 4.5 hours of wireless listening, and when the batteries are dead just connect it with your phone to charge (and keep listening). Kickstarter loves it: 9 days left, $720,000 funded.

Google's note-taking app, now on iOS
06

A few weeks ago I discovered Google Keep, Google's own approach to note-taking. Whether you like it or not depends on your opinion on 'digital sticky notes'. Their new iOS companion app looks rather lovely though!
