Editor's note

Last week Emeritus Professor Alan Mackay-Sim was awarded Australian of the Year, and reports trumpeted a link between his stem cell research and a case in Poland where a man with paraplegia had his mobility restored. But the link between the two is not clear, and as Melissa Little writes, reports of these isolated cases can bring hope to sufferers when we're still a long way off a strong evidence base.
And there's a theory that says well known bank failures wouldn't have happened if there were women at the helm, because they are considered less likely to take risks than their male counterparts. But new research finds female bankers are just as likely to take risks. In fact, it's the culture of the bank they work in that's likely to shape their behaviour, not the other way around.
