National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week
Emergency Telecommunicators (dispatchers) are a vital lifeline between the residents of Juno Beach and Police and Fire Rescue. They are seldom seen … but are the calm voice on the other end of the phone when you dial 9-1-1.
Emergency calls in Juno Beach are handled by "NorthCom" which is located in Palm Beach Gardens and serves Juno Beach, Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, North Palm Beach, Tequesta, Jupiter Inlet Colony, and the Florida Atlantic University Police Departments.
NorthCom's dedicated telecommunicators are the "calm in the storm" and are the first point of contact in an emergency. With that goes a huge responsibility which includes obtaining essential information, remaining calm, calming others, and sending the appropriate responders to the right location.
NorthCom’s dispatchers work 10-hour shifts and non-traditional hours, such as nights, weekends, and holidays. The 24/7 operation assists callers who are upset, angry, panicked or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
One of a dispatchers most important roles is in keeping Law Enforcement and other emergency workers safe by relaying vital information to first responders that can protect their safety. Unfortunately, these telecommunicators don’t get the recognition that Law Enforcement Officers or Fire-Rescue personnel do because they’re not out in the public where their faces and their uniforms are seen.
Successfully proclaimed by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1991, National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is designated as the second week of April every year. During this week, the telecommunications personnel in the public safety communities across the nation are honored and recognized.
The Juno Beach Police Foundation joins the men and women of our Juno Beach Police Department in recognizing, thanking, and celebrating the highly resolute individuals who make up NorthCom.
