Research Showcase winners announced

The Research Showcase last Thursday featured more than 90 exhibits. The presentations explored such topics as the Columbia River ecosystem, mobile storytelling, the effects of hormones on hearing, environmental contaminants in ordinary household products, cultural diversity and end-of-life care.

Awards were presented to three presentations in each of two categories.

Academic Affairs welcomes Elias Cohen

Elias

Elias Cohen joined WSU Vancouver on April 2 as the research analyst for Academic Affairs. For the past five years he has served as a postdoctoral researcher in cognitive neuroscience at Vanderbilt University and as a postdoctoral researcher in visual perception at SUNY College of Optometry previous to that. He earned his doctor of philosophy in cognitive psychology at Rutgers University and his bachelor of arts in psychology and philosophy from Macalester College. Elias is passionate about using institutional research to improve educational outcomes, students’ lives and to help WSU Vancouver meet the diverse needs of Southwest Washington.

The 18th Annual Fine Arts Student Exhibition is on display in the Dengerink Administration Building Gallery through June 30. The artworks originate from six fine arts classes including visual concepts, printmaking, photography, painting and drawing.

Additional work from these classes and the fine arts program can be seen in the first floor hallway of the Multimedia Classroom Building.

The exhibition was curated and organized by Avantika Bawa assistant professor of fine arts; Harrison Higgs, associate professor of fine arts; and Dale Strouse, fine arts tech II.

Pick up the 2014 Salmon Creek Journal

The 2014 Salmon Creek Journal has been released and is widely available for free on campus. Look for pick-up stations in the Office of Student Involvement, Firstenburg Student Commons, Student Services Center, The Bookie, Library, Writing Center, Office of Development and Alumni Relations and the Recreation Office/Annex.

The student-run journal features a collection of prose, poetry and visual arts contributed by faculty, staff, students and alumni. David Menchaca, assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, is the journal’s faculty advisor.

Library’s hours extend during dead week and finals week

The Library’s hours will change for the duration of dead week and finals week. April 26 through May 9 the Library’s hours will be:

Saturday – Sunday: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Monday – Thursday: 8 a.m. – 11 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Library will be closed Saturday, May 10 for Commencement.

The Library will reopen May 11 on summer schedule:
Monday – Thursday: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Friday: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Saturday – Sunday: noon – 5 p.m.

The Library will be closed for Memorial Day May 25 – 26.

Café hours reduced beginning finals week

Beginning Monday, May 5 through summer session, the Dengerink Administration Building Café will be open Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. The café will be closed Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day. The Commons Café is closed during summer sessions and reopens in the fall.

CDP kindergarten open house

Learn about the Child Development Program’s kindergarten at an open house. Meet the teachers, learn about the program and tour the facilities. The CDP kindergarten is a full-day program with wrap-around child care at no additional cost. Class size is limited to 18. Your child must be 5 by August 31 to attend the 2014/15 school year.
