Welcome to our final edition of 1898 for the 2020-2021 school year. And for our newest graduates—the class of “21 Blackjack”—this is their first. We’re glad to have this chance to congratulate them on their commencement and also acknowledge the grace, determination and resilience they showed us throughout a challenging year. They took the cards they were dealt and went “all in,” every step of the way. As they walk their paths beyond our ivy walls, we wish them success and happiness. May we all enjoy a rejuvenating and safe summer!

Message from Kelly (McCarthy) Eng '90, CHS Alumnae Association President

As we close the 2020-21 school year, the Association is looking back and forward at the same time. It has been a year unlike any other, without an opportunity to celebrate and get together in our usual ways. We missed the opportunity to gather in person, but at the same time, new avenues were opened up to us. Read more.

Alumnae Association End-of-the-Year Wrap-Up Meeting

Thank you to those who attended the CHS Alumnae Association end-of-year wrap-up meeting and for all alumnae who attended the virtual meetings throughout the year. It was a great turn out to end a memorable year. It was even more special to have alumnae re-connect in person, a first since March 2020!

Volunteering within our Community

Thanks to the 31 alumnae who joined the CHS Alumnae Association Virtual Soup Spot initiative with Soup Sisters! Together they helped to raise enough money to make 120 lbs. of zuppa di pesce (Italian fish soup) for a local shelter. Many thanks to Chef Nicole Gomes for also taking the time to chat with our alumnae!

Life is a Journey

Life is a journey, and that’s certainly true for Yvonne Deng ’16, poised medical student and CHS alumna. Read about Yvonne’s journey in this month’s feature article.

Volunteer Opportunity with Community Women’s Initiative Item Drive – August 29, 2021

The Community Women’s Initiative (CWI) is holding an item drive on August 29, 2021 to collect household necessities, personal care products and monetary products to support women and children living in shelters across the lower mainland. If you would like to get involved, visit their website our GoFundMe page.

Led by students of the UBC Faculty of Medicine, including alumna Yvonne Deng ’16, CWI is a non-profit organization which aims to empower self-identified women and promote equity, opportunity and safety through feminist approaches to advocacy. Any support would be greatly appreciated.

Grade 7 Final Assembly

Our Grade 7 students celebrated their last year in the Junior School at the Grade 7 Final Assembly. We’re excited to welcome the Class of 2026 to the Senior School in the fall!

June Pride Month!

Students worked alongside muralist Jessa Gilbert to design and paint a crosswalk at the Blenheim Street roundabout. The artwork was inspired by the progress pride flag, which celebrates the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and specifically acknowledges transgender people and 2SLGBTQIA+ people of colour.

Sports Day and Summer Games!

Always a memorable time of the year, Sports Day and Summer Games in the Junior and Senior School were as full of energy and fun as ever.

Celebrating our very own CHS Olympic Athletes

In anticipation of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad from July 23, 2021 to August 8, 2021, Crofton House School celebrates alumnae who have competed in past Olympic Games, and one who will be competing in “Tokyo 2020” this summer.

Stephanie Grauer ’15 will be competing this summer in Tokyo. As a member of the women’s four rowing team, she will be competing in an event that is being staged for the first time since 1992 in Barcelona. Let’s cheer on our CHS alumna this summer. Go Stephanie! Go Canada!

Lauren Wilkinson ’07 represented Canada as a member of Canada’s women’s eight rowing team winning an Olympic silver medal on August 2, 2012 at the London 2012 summer games. Lauren was the recipient of the Alumnae Association’s 2013 Achievement Award.

Samantha Lam ’96 competed as a member of the Hong Kong equestrian team at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China. Following these games, Samantha was named Athlete Role Model for Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to alumna Julia Lindsay ’15 who was one of eight women racing for Oxford University in the prestigious Oxford vs. Cambridge Boat Race in London, England on April 4, 2021. The Boat Race is a prolific rowing event and contested annually between Oxford and Cambridge University since 1856. Congratulations Julia!

Celebration of Life

It is with sadness that we inform our CHS community of the passing of Marian (Vance) Pocock ’35. Marian was not just an alumna but also worked at Crofton House as a librarian, French and English teacher and served as an Administrator in the absence of the Head of School. An extensive feature of her many contributions to the CHS community will be included in the upcoming Ivy Magazine. Read her obituary online.

It is with sadness that we inform our CHS community of the passing of Sandra (Martin) Teeter ’77. Our deepest condolences to Sandra’s family at this time. Read her obituary online.

Crofton House is pleased to announce the launch of The Ivy magazine. As you might recall, for many years The Ivy Leaf was the Crofton House alumnae publication. It featured many insightful and inspiring stories, articles, pictures and interviews.

This new Crofton House magazine, The Ivy, will be a community publication with a strong alumnae presence. The fall edition will include interviews with the three 2021 Alumnae Achievement Award Winners: Dagmar Timmer ’91 and Vanessa Timmer ’92, joint recipients of the Distinguished Alumnae Achievement Award, and Psyche Loui ’99, recipient of the Junior Alumna Achievement Award.

The Ivy will be mailed to all alumnae with active addresses. If you would like to check that the School has your most current address or for any questions, email us at alumnae@croftonhouse.ca.
