Special Barnard College Construction Update - Monday, June 27, 2016

Dear Claremont resident:

It has come to our attention that one of our subcontractors came to campus early this morning to remove a large, heavy piece of equipment that was no longer needed and that this work caused noise on Claremont that woke several residents.  We sincerely apologize for this disturbance.  While there will be instances in any construction project when late night/early morning noise is unavoidable, we are trying very hard to keep them to the barest minimum and in those cases, to at least provide advance notice that the noise will be happening.  This did not happen last night as it should have, and for that, again, we sincerely apologize.

The Department of Transportation requires contractors to transport overweight equipment that has to enter and leave the City via bridges and tunnels during the overnight hours.  Our contractor expected the subcontractor to arrive by 10 p.m. (which is within our typical window for deliveries), but the subcontractor encountered issues at the bridge crossing and we were not notified of the delay.  We met with our construction team today and have told them that in the future, they must notify us in advance so we can alert the community.

We expect a similar situation tomorrow morning around 4 a.m., so we have asked the construction team to do what they can to mitigate the noise.  Their plan now is to drive the truck onto the site around 4 a.m., but to delay off-loading the equipment until after 8 a.m.  We do not currently have other deliveries scheduled this week, but it is possible there could be more added as we bring equipment to the site to begin rock excavation next week.  We will keep you posted as we know more.

In addition, Time Warner will be working tomorrow near the north gate of the Barnard construction site to restore service to a few of our campus facilities. Their work will occur mostly on the Barnard-side sidewalk, but it is possible they might have some activity in the northbound lane of Claremont.

Construction Schedule

We have finished our Saturday work and have returned to a Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. schedule.  We do not anticipate adding additional days to the schedule, but should we have weather or other delays, we may need to make slight adjustments. Should that occur, we would send out an announcement in advance. We also will not be working on Monday, July 4.

You may hear some additional noise towards the end of this week as we do the final preparation of the site before beginning rock excavation Tuesday, July 5.
