Although transgender athletes have been able to compete at the Olympics since the early 2000s, Australian sporting bodies are just starting to grapple with the inclusion of gender diverse athletes in this country.
And as Daryl Adair writes, this is causing some problems. The new AFL Gender Diversity Policy, he writes, is not just contradictory, it also places an unfair burden on transgender athletes to track testosterone levels and performance results over a two-year period.
While we’re talking trans, let’s consider what it means to be “cisgender”. You might have noticed the term being used more frequently in the media and elsewhere, and perhaps you’ve wondered why. Joanna McIntyre explains where it comes from and why it matters (spoiler: it’s great for helping everyone think about gender).
