Greetings from your Community BoardBoard Chair, Karolin Potter Message from the ChairOur Waihoro/Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board had two contrasting events in the last couple of weeks. First, we and the Horticultural Society had the Edible and Sustainable Garden Awards in the Christchurch Trotting Club rooms, which was a fun and rewarding occasion. There was an an amazing mix of people from diverse communities, ages and interests, lots of laughter, excellent food, terrific organisation by council staff and wonderful photographs of beginners gardens, experts gardens and everyone in between. Highlights of our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Tuesday 30 March at Spreydon School's Raupō Hub. Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from local residents as part of our Public Forum and Deputations by Appointment. Congratulations to Edible and Sustainable Garden Award winnersThe 2021 Waihoro/Spreydon-Cashmere Edible and Sustainable Garden Awards were presented at the Addington Events Centre on 29 March, at an event jointly hosted by Canterbury Horticultural Society and Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board. Forty three recipients received a participation certificate, while 10 recipients unable to attend the award ceremony, will receive their certificates by post. In addition, six special awards were presented. The winners were selected by Horticultural Society assessors, in recognition of unique and special efforts: Special Award for Beginner gardener: Kat and Brendon Kircher Special Award for Tomatoes: Shelley McMurtrie Special Award for Fruit and berries: Cameron Bell Special Award for Organic garden: Philippe Meyer Special Award for Sustainability features: Ruth Vercoe Special Award for Yield: Garry and Eileen Kerr Special award winners each received a certificate, along with a gift bag kindly donated by Oderings, which included an Oderings voucher, herb & vegetable seeds, seed raising mix, and seaweed tonic. Board Chair Karolin Potter says "I would really like to emphasis that this occasion is an acknowledgement of people who are trying, as much as it a recognition of a lifetimes' work for the gardener." "The Board wants to see more gardens that will survive climate change, introduce us to new vegetables and fruit, might teach us how to make a rain garden or how to garden in a tiny space or pots or most importantly is the garden of a brand new gardener be they 7 or 70." We look forward to seeing you next year.
