Editor's note

Back in 2016, when the Great Barrier Reef was seeing its worst-ever coral bleaching, a 1,000-kilometre stretch of mangrove forest was dying in remote northern Australia. Mangroves store huge amounts of carbon and are the foundation for valuable fisheries. After investigating, researchers have found that extreme heat, drought and sea level were likely responsible.

Also today, we kick off our Charities in Australia series examining the trends in how Australians give, along with an infographic snapshot of the size and scope of Australia's not-for-profit sector.
