Artswork: South East Bridge enews
March 2017

Editorial

Welcome to the latest edition of the South East Bridge enews

This month, we have a couple of special features on Artsmark engagement taking place in both Milton Keynes and Reading. It's great to hear news of schools working towards and achieving Artsmark to enhance access and opportunities for children and young people to grow through arts and culture. As well as this, we take a look at the ongoing Bacc for the Future campaign, which saw a letter delivered to 10 Downing Street this month as part of its ongoing mission to open up a broader and more balanced curriculum in schools. In addition, two areas we are working in through Local Cultural Education Partnerships have been awarded funding through the Great Place Scheme, which is fantastic news for all those involved. The Great Place Scheme is designed to put arts, culture and heritage at the heart of successful communities across England. Sixteen areas will pilot new approaches that enable cultural, community and civic organisations to work more closely together.

With a wealth of free resources at your fingertips via the Artswork website, all you need to do is register for unlimited access. If you tick the box to register as an ENYAN member as part of this, you will also receive discounts rates on a selection of our Artsplan professional development courses.

Wishing you a great month ahead,

Jane Bryant

Announcing...Artswork's 2017 Conference: Creativity & Life Chances

We are pleased to announce the title of our 2017 Conference, Creativity & Life Chances, which will take place on the 22nd November at the Wellcome Collection

Experience the arts, see evidence of best practice and be inspired to do more for young people.

Artswork empowers children and young people through arts and culture to find their voice, become skilled leaders and achieve their aspirations. As we mark our 30th birthday year as an organisation, this conference will inspire decision makers within local authorities, housing associations, national charities and education to use creativity to enhance their services and opportunities for young people.

Through innovative case studies, interactive workshops and inspirational speakers – including young people themselves - this day provides opportunities to see and hear about the positive impact of arts and culture on the lives and wellbeing of children and young people.

A limited number of early bird tickets will be on sale through the Artswork website soon.

A full programme for the day, including speaker information, will be announced in due course.

If you would like to keep up to date with information as it is released, please email info@artswork.org.uk for more details.

ARTSMARK | Spotlight on...

"Before our Artsmark journey began, our arts and cultural provision was somewhat limited, with very few visits from professional artists, and a music curriculum that was having little impact on the learning of our pupils. It provided us with the necessary support to review our curriculum’s relevance and suitability for our students and their unique and individual needs, whilst still maintaining that key element of fun."

Great Place Scheme

The Great Place Scheme is designed to put arts, culture and heritage at the heart of successful communities across England. Sixteen areas will pilot new approaches that enable cultural, community and civic organisations to work more closely together.

In East Kent, the grant will support Pioneering Places, "an ambitious project that will make [the area] a better place to live, work and visit, by exploring heritage, developing civic pride and connecting artists and communities".

In Reading, a grant of £558,400 will "build on the momentum of the 2016 Year of Culture, to transform cultural opportunities for both residents and visitors".

Bacc for the Future campaign continues: letter delivered to Downing Street

"Dear Prime Minister,

The harmful impact of the English Baccalaureate

The Department for Education’s proposed new English Baccalaureate (EBacc) is damaging the quality of the education offered to pupils in England. It is harming the uptake of non-EBacc subjects, most notably creative, artistic and technical subjects.

In 2016, for the first time since 2012, the percentage of pupils taking at least one arts subject declined and from 2015-2016 there was an 8% decline in uptake of creative subjects (arts + D&T); the largest year on year decline in a decade. Teacher numbers and teaching hours are declining almost twice as fast in creative subjects (whether including D&T or not) as they are overall.

The Department for Education’s consultation on these proposals titled Implementing the English Baccalaureate closed more than a year ago and we are still awaiting a response."

AN INTERVIEW WITH...
Milton Keynes Arts Centre

Our Artsmark team recently met with Thomas Eke, Learning and Participation Programmer for Milton Keynes Arts Centre, to discuss the organisation’s work with schools. During this academic year, Artswork will be hosting five Artsmark Development Days at the Centre.

A: What’s been your favourite work you’ve done with schools in Milton Keynes?

T: It would have to be our current project, Mark Making, which has been led by artist Izzy Parker as part of our 12-month programme, Common Ground. The Common Ground work has successfully brought together artists with our local community and has included schools, colleges and older learners.

Call for youth-led organisations to act as joint hosts for Artswork’s 2017 Conference

We are seeking to engage a group of up to four enthusiastic and skilled young people who can act as conference hosts for this event, alongside our Chief Executive.

This is an important role which will see the young people involved introducing speakers, giving instructions to conference attendees, managing a question and answer session and comments from attendees throughout the day. They will be the face of the conference and will work with the rest of the conference team to ensure the event runs smoothly.

engage launch registration for Children's Art Week 2017

This year's week-long campaign will run from Saturday 10th to Saturday 18th June.

"Last year, more than 13,000 people took part in an amazing 109 events across 95 wonderful venues all around the UK. This year, we want to make Children’s Art Week bigger, brighter and more successful than it’s ever been before.

Events can be held in galleries, arts centres and museums, and at libraries, heritage sites and community and youth centres, too. We also hope to encourage more schools than ever before to take part – we’re piloting a scheme in Leicester and Thanet, inspired by another of our successful projects, Generation ART, and we’d like schools to exhibit artwork that has been curated and promoted by students themselves."

Registration is open until Monday 8th May.
