One of our 18 distribution partners, Harvard Business Publishing (HBP), has decided to limit the number and types of cases they distribute from the Ivey case collection. They will no longer carry any non-US, single country cases such as a Canadian company doing business in Canada or a French business operating solely in France. Ivey Publishing continues to register a record number of high quality cases (a new case per day) from around the world and will also continue to distribute the entire Harvard collection in North America.

The most current and complete collection for both Ivey and Harvard can always be found on www.iveycases.com. There are no changes anticipated from our other 17 worldwide distribution partners.

Craig Kielburger Cases

The Craig Kielburger video case series is designed as a multiple use case since its scope is wide-ranging. It traces the evolution of both a leader and an organization through major strategic change. The case series lends itself to understanding leadership character, social entrepreneurship, strategic renewal and innovation in both not-for-profit and for-profit organizations. It has been successfully used with undergraduates, graduates and executives in courses on leadership, strategy and sustainability. The video case series provides an inspirational look at leadership and innovation and provides key insights about the relationship between leadership character, strategic renewal and social innovation. It is particularly suited to understanding elements of leadership character - transcendence, courage, justice, humanity, temperance and wisdom - and the important role of character in strategic renewal and innovation.

Beanz Versus Starbucks: Personality in a Cup!

Beanz Espresso Bar is located in downtown Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. They are operating in a market with high rivalry (11 other coffee businesses in a two-block radius). The economy on Prince Edward Island has seen several diners, restaurants and coffee shops close their doors within the past few years, while simultaneously drawing in large corporate businesses such as Starbucks and a Running Room. Beanz has thus far survived the major environmental changes and managed to keep its clientele. The owners, Lori and Doug, feel it is a prime time to either sell Beanz and leave the industry, or exploit their competitive advantages to grow and capture more market share.

This case is intended for use in undergraduate and graduate courses in entrepreneurship and strategy. Students are challenged to consider the future direction of Beanz taking into consideration Lori and Doug's preferences, the external market as well as the current capabilities of Beanz. This case incorporates four objectives. The first objective is a quick valuation of a life-style business. The second is to assess the changing environment in which Beanz is working. The third is to determine the role of knowledge and brand in the entrepreneurial process. The final, but most important objective, is to evaluate the strategic options available to the founders.

  • Allows students to evaluate potential markets using common business tools like CAGE analysis, SWOT analysis and the GE and BCG matrices. Apply the various models to select an entry mode strategy.
  • Encourages students to analyze the qualitative and quantitative data presented to the decision-maker.Asks students to prioritize foreign markets to determine the country in which the decision-maker should enter next.
