Performance Reviews – An Effective Tool or a Waste of Time?

 

There are a lot of thoughts and opinions regarding Performance Reviews but a general consensus tends to be that they are a necessary evil that can be very valuable - if carried out well.

 

The performance review process can either be formal and structured or an informal annual chat. It can be strictly rated, measured, tied to a remuneration scale or ad hoc and based on business achievements throughout the year. However they are performed, there are certain factors that will contribute to their effectiveness.

Unpaid Work - Legitimate Internship or Breach of Workplace Laws?

 

The Fair Work Ombudsman has focussed its attention on the issue of unpaid work arrangements, which can encompass a range of circumstances such as vocational placements, internships, work experience and work trials.

The research into such unpaid work arrangements will be performed by University of Adelaide Law School academics Andrew Stewart and Rosemary Owens and funded by the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Minimum Wage Rise, Modern Awards and Transitioning

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), has called for a $26 rise in the minimum wage and 3.8% pay rise for other award-reliant workers in it’s wage review submission released last month.

ACTU secretary Jeff Lawrence argued that, “one in six workers can barely meet the cost of living let alone live comfortably in an economy that is the envy of the developed world”.
