Message from the Executive Director

Malaika Rivers photoMost businesses reap their rewards in short order. When your business is planning and delivering public infrastructure, it takes years, even decades.

But those moments do come. After more than 20 years of planning improvements to the Windy Hill Interchange, a viable partnership to fund the necessary upgrades is coming together. Coupled with improvements along the entire corridor, the commercial and residential owners in the area will see $46 million worth of traffic and pedestrian enhancements in the next few years.

The CID is proud to lead the efforts to protect and grow property values in the community. Read on to see how we’re looking out for you.

Best,

Malaika Rivers

CID Commits $5 Million to Windy Hill Interchange Improvements

Tired of the gridlock at Windy Hill and I-75?  This interchange has become a major commuting corridor over the years while the CID has explored ways to improve it.

In August, the CID Board of Directors approved a $5 million commitment to pay for a quarter of the $20 million estimated to construct operational improvements.

Known as a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), the proposed solution eliminates left turns at signals improving traffic flow substaintially without the addition of extra lanes and bridge reconstruction. The balance of the funding includes a $7 million commitment from Cobb County and a proposed mixture of state and federal funds.

The $5 million pledge solidifies the CID's continued commitment to this critical project and is a lynchpin to the funding strategy. Assuming the additional funds are secured, the entire project could be completed within four years, with construction beginning as early as 2016.

Arterial Rapid Transit, the Cost Effective Connection for Cobb County

Imagine hopping on a transit line that takes you to various attractions in Atlanta such as an exhibit at the High Museum.  No sitting behind your steering wheel in bumper to bumper traffic, stressed out because you are going to be late for your event.

Arterial Rapid Transit will connect the burgeoning markets along metro Atlanta’s northwest corridor. Not only does it connect people with places, it is identified as the most cost effective transit option. Arterial Rapid Transit performs similar to rail, with its raised platforms, real-time arrival updates, and off-vehicle fare collection, but at a fraction of the cost.

Bus Rapid Transit in Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland, Ohio, has seen the way rapid transit serves as an economic driver as well as a transportation solution. Officials from around Cobb County, including the CID, saw firsthand how it is transforming the city and creating development opportunities. Cobb can expect similar results, as a recent study projected 1.2 million square feet of new retail space; 10.8 million square feet of new office space; 11,000 new housing units; plus over 50,000 new jobs in the office and retail sectors.

In the future, riding along Cobb Parkway to some of your favorite spots will be as simple as climbing into a comfortable seat that becomes your gateway to the entire metro region.
