Last night Liberal MPs rejected a push for a free vote on same-sex marriage and renewed their commitment to pursue a plebiscite. If that fails, as appears likely, the next step appears to be a postal ballot. But, as Michelle Grattan writes, that’s likely to be met with a legal challenge from marriage equality advocates.
In other news, fewer men are teaching at Australian primary schools, despite the many initiatives to attract them to the sector. Vaughan Cruickshank says schools that want to retain male teachers should help them cope with the gender-based challenges they face, such as uncertainty about physical contact with students.
