News and updates from your local APS State Committee
May 2015
From the State Chair

On 1 and 2 May the APS Board met in Adelaide. On Friday 1 May there were two important meetings with Society members and the Board. The evening meeting was a general meeting with members. Earlier in the afternoon there was a productive meeting between members of the South Australian State and Branch committee and Mike Kyrios, President, the Executive Director, Lyn Littlefield and Kate Moore, Director with special responsibility for South Australia.

The meeting was an idea that I had at the APS National Forum for Branch chairs in February this year. This National Forum agreed that the agenda for the Society’s 50th anniversary year be UNITY. To promote unity in SA between Society members I wanted Lyn and Mike to meet the members of the SA Branch committee, together with the members of the SA State committee. These two groups meet together every month to drive and coordinate activities for the Society across South Australia.

The SA Branch is comprised of members elected at the AGMs. The SA State committee is comprised of the representative of the APS Division of General Practising Psychologists, the State Newsletter Editor, the Political Liaison Office (currently vacant) and the Chair (or delegate) of APS Colleges active in SA.

I was delighted to see so many members of the two committees talking together about unity. It was a pleasure to see representation from the APS Colleges of Health, Organisational, Clinical, Forensic and Educational & Developmental Psychologists. Unfortunately an incorrect email address resulted in no Sport and Exercise Psychologists being able to attend. However this connection has been re-established and members of the APS College of S & E Psychologists are planning a roster so they will be able to have a presence at the State committee meetings.

I was delighted with the meeting and am looking forward to further expressions of UNITY between Society members in South Australia.

“Everything we wanted to know about children who light fires and engage in sexually harmful behaviours……..but were afraid to ask”

The APS College of Forensic Psychologists seminar series

Monday 25th May 2015, 1pm-5pm at The Hackney Hotel

In the last 25 years the treatment of children who engage in sexually harmful behaviour has changed considerably. We are now only just starting to more fully understand children who deliberately light fires. Using New Zealand data from the largest international study on child arson (N=1,790) and a study on adolescents with harmful sexual behaviours (N=1,200), this presentation will give a snapshot of the latest research and also shed light on what is good (and hopefully useful) treatment for these groups of children.

Presenter: Associate Professor Ian Lambie, PhD, P.G.DipClinPsych, DipBus, Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology, University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Presented by Cassie Hilditch

May 21st, UniSA Magill campus, 2-3pm

Sleep inertia is the term used to define the period of grogginess and impaired cognitive performance experienced immediately after waking. This period is of obvious consequence to shift workers who may be required to return to safety critical duties soon after waking. This presentation will cover the findings from Cassie’s PhD research which explored the profile of sleep inertia in the context of two shift work scenarios: split-shift schedules, and napping on night shift.

Meet Division of GPPP Deputy representative, Farah Sobhanian

Farah Sobhanian

I am a registered psychologist with 10 years clinical experience. I have an extensive background working with people experiencing depression, anxiety, grief and loss, gambling and relationship issues. In addition to mainstream clients, I also work with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) clients. This group includes international students, refugees, migrants and asylum seekers. I speak Persian and Dari.

I work in private practice based at Gawler Place Medical Practice. I am passionate about the issues which affect general practising psychologists. My vision is that through collaboration between the Division and other psychologists, the community will have a better appreciation of the expertise that this group offers to groups and individuals.
