DACA has protected 700,000 individuals – known as DREAMers- from deportation since its implementation. This decision represents a major win for the undocumented, low-income, and immigrant communities that CPC serves. According to the Center for Migration Studies, there are 1.7 million undocumented Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in the U.S., and 167,000 of them live in New York State. Immigrant communities have been under constant attack throughout the duration of the current Federal Administration, with increased border enforcement, and roll backs and restrictions on legal immigration pathways like asylum protections, more restrictive public charge determinations, and hikes in visa renewal and naturalization application fees. In addition, cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) have further contributed to the physical and psychological harm that immigrant communities and Black and Brown communities have experienced through over-surveillance, over-policing, and over-incarceration. Today’s decision is crucial, particularly at a time of economic devastation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is only the beginning in offering immigrant communities the reprieve and dignity they deserve. "The U.S. Supreme Court decision is a major win for the immigrant communities that
we serve. With one in seven AAPI immigrants living without status, this is just the first step toward the longer fight for immigrant justice." said Wayne Ho, President & CEO of the Chinese-American Planning Council. "While we celebrate today’s win, CPC calls on our communities to continue fighting against police brutality by both local law enforcement and ICE, to end the criminalization of immigrant communities through the New Way Forward Act, and to provide a pathway to citizenship through the Dream and Promise Act.” The fight is far from over, and CPC encourages its staff and community members to get involved with the New Way Forward Act, as well as the Dream and Promise Act.
