Welcome to Gerda Verburg, the new Coordinator of the SUN Movement


On 3 March 2016, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Gerda Verburg of the Netherlands as the Coordinator of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement. The SUN Movement Coordinator will work with 56 country governments that lead the SUN Movement, united with UN agencies, civil society, business and donors, in a common mission to defeat malnutrition in all its forms. The first Lancet Series on Breastfeeding is launched


On 29 January 2016, The Lancet Breastfeeding Series was launched at The Kaiser Family Foundation Conference Center in Washington D.C. The Series is the first of its kind to evaluate global breastfeeding levels, trends and inequalities. The Series underscores the importance of policy interventions to increase and sustain breastfeeding. READ MORE ▶

SUN Business Network launches in Mozambique

On 9 February 2016, the Government of Mozambique and the Department for International Development of the UK Government, with the support of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), launched a SUN Business Network with 19 private companies to support the country’s efforts towards Scaling Up Nutrition. READ MORE ▶

Prime Minister of Vietnam signs a decree to mandate food fortification

On 28 January 2016, Prime Minister of Vietnam, Nguyen Tan Dung, signed a decree to mandate food fortification as a means of improving people’s vitamin and mineral intake. READ MORE ▶

Experiences for nutrition advocacy shared at civil society workshop in Senegal

On 26 January 2016, Senegal’s civil society alliance held an advocacy workshop to foster learning and sharing about advocacy efforts between member organisation. READ MORE ▶

Dangote and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation jointly invest $100 million to combat malnutrition in Nigeria

On 21 January 2016, the Aliko Dangote Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation jointly announced a combined commitment of $100 million, over the next five years (2016-2020) towards ending undernutrition in Nigeria. READ MORE ▶

Pakistan launches a provincial level SUN Secretariat in the Punjab Province

On 18 January 2016, a provincial level SUN Movement Secretariat was launched in the Punjab Province of Pakistan. The event was organised by the Planning and Development Board with the support of the Micronutrient Initiative (MI) and Pakistan’s national SUN Movement Secretariat. READ MORE ▶

The Minister of Health launches Niger’s first Multi-sectoral Nutrition Strategy

On 15 January 2016, the Government of Niger launched its first multi-sectoral nutrition security strategy titled “Politique national multisectorielle de sécurité nutritionnelle”, focused on the engagement of various stakeholder groups in the fight against malnutrition. The launch concludes over six months of development, including consultations regionally and across ten ministries. READ MORE ▶

The Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo signed a decree to establish the country’s platform for nutrition

On 21 December 2015, Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo Mapon of the Democratic Republic of Congo, signed a decree to formalise the establishment of the national multi-sectoral platform for nutrition. READ MORE ▶
