FileMaker Feud 2011, Round 1

Header

by Kirk Bowman

What happens when you survey 100 FileMaker developers? The first-ever FileMaker Feud, hosted by MightyData, at the 2011 FileMaker Developer Conference. Two teams competed for the title of FileMaker Feud Champion (and cool prizes like the iPad 2 and MightyCoach) by choosing the most popular answer to questions about layouts, calculations and scripts. In this video (first of three), learn who is the Northern-most FileMaker developer... Read more...

Select * From FileMaker

FileMaker Pro succeeds as a database system because of its many layers. As a rapid development database you can create a robust and elegant solution fairly quickly. Dig deeper, invest some time and effort, and you expose powerful tools and options that extend your solution. One such hidden tool is FileMaker’s internal SQL engine, which intrepid developers expose via plugins.

You might ask why bother, since SQL is a complex language with specific syntax we must learn outside FileMaker. Also, almost everything that SQL does within FileMaker can be natively accomplished without adding plugins. However, I believe there are times when the power of SQL combines nicely with FileMaker to produce better, smarter solutions, and this makes learning and using SQL worthwhile. Read more...

West Coast FMPug Tour, Validation With Script Triggers

Header

by Martha Zink

With the post-DevCon madness coming to a slow end, I’m excited to announce that I’ll be traveling the last week in September and participating in the West Coast FMPug Tour!

What’s the schedule you ask? Here it is:

    September 27 – Portland
    September 28 – San Francisco
September 29 – FileMaker Inc. (The Wedge) in Santa Clara

With that said, I’d like to share with you one of the techniques that I’ll be presenting at the FMPugs – and that’s controlling the user via script triggers. Now I say this cautiously, as I can feel Steven Blackwell rolling his eyes at me from 1500 miles away, concerning himself with Security (and rightfully so!). Read more...

Making Things Happen: Setting Priorities

Header

by Susan Fennema

This is the last in a three-part series. See part one and part two.

In the first two parts of Making Things Happen, we talked about setting goals and then building a to-do list/timeline to execute it. This goal and timeline are all well and good, but what happens when you start mixing in multiple goals and timelines. How do you actually decide how to prioritize your day-to-day work? And what do you do if the plan breaks down within the first five minutes of your week? Read more...

Any Musicians Out There?

Header

Matt Navarre of MSN Media noticed that many developers are also musicians and wondered about the link. He put together this survey, just for fun. Get your answers in by September 16! Matt will be featured next month as a guest blogger and will announce the results. Follow our blog or watch next month's newsletter as we will post the results there as well.
