Budget Coverage, Even Better

As the start of federal budget season approaches with the release of the White House proposal on Monday, the National Press Foundation has compiled resources we know you’ll find useful.

Here:

  • Tips from Steve Gettinger of CQ Weekly and NPR National Business Editor Marilyn Geewax on understanding the process and developing story ideas.
  •  A quotable (and embeddable) interview with former Rep. Lee Hamilton, who believes the process is broken.
  • A video with detailed slides on OMB’s process of preparing the President’s budget, including links to web sites with lots of data to help you put the numbers into a context that’s meaningful for your audience.

And here:

A blog and video with two smart experts from the Pew Charitable Trusts, including super-helpful tools for analyzing federal money that goes to states and for tracking trends in state fiscal issues.

Apply for the Thomas L. Stokes Awards for Best Energy Writing

Each year, the National Press Foundation presents the Thomas L. Stokes Award to a journalist for the best writing on the subject of energy. The Stokes Award was established in the spring of 1959 by friends and admirers of the late Thomas L. Stokes, the syndicated Washington columnist on national affairs. The winner of the Award receives $1,000 and a citation. The subject may be any form of energy—oil, gas, coal, nuclear, water, solar, etc. Deadline to submit an application is March 6. When Super Bowl becomes Super Bowl™

Every year about this time a certain professional football game seems to attract national – no, international – attention. Its popularity raises the temptation to set up events, promotions, contests or general advertisements leading up and into the “Big Game.” Follow the links embedded in this post to learn the NFL’s attempts to stop the use of terms that would only seem to be tangentially related to the Super Bowl trademark.

Kevin M. Goldberg is an attorney at Fletcher, Heald and Hildreth LLC and he is vice chairman of the National Press Foundation.

Celebrate The Best in Journalism

Join us on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when we celebrate the future of journalism and NPF’s mission of making good journalists better!

There’s still time to purchase a table or tickets. Contact jessica@nationalpress.org or click here.

The NPF award winners are an awesome group that will inspire you. And we’ll hear from two news leaders about the future of journalism: Alberto Ibarguen, president of the Knight Foundation, and Gabriel Snyder, editor of The New Republic.

The dinner provides NPF's largest source of unrestricted revenue. By helping to defray our costs, you ensure that we reach more journalists each year through our no-cost training programs.

Are You Vulnerable to Cyberattack?

All a burglar needs to get in your home is an unlocked window or door. If you don’t install updates when they are issued, you’re leaving your digital home wide open for cyber criminals to break in.

And let’s face it: As journalists we have some very valuable information stored in our devices.
