Chancellor Philip Hammond outlined an upbeat UK spring budget yesterday. Higher growth is forecast in the near-term and public borrowing is down from his last statement. Our panel of academic experts unpicks the key outcomes – for the UK economy, businesses big and small, taxes, savings, social care and education. Meanwhile, economists Costas Milas and Mike Ellington point to the broken forecasting tools at Hammond's disposal and warn of the impact of looming Brexit uncertainty.
Responses to the budget may be varied, but most academics seem to agree that Brexit is a bad thing. Paul A Taylor says the higher education sector is guilty of groupthink on the issue of leaving the EU – an organisation which, he argues, mirrors the undemocratic, bureaucratic style of today's universities.
Meanwhile, Elaine is a beautiful witch looking for love. She wants to be adored, lusted after, and treated like a trophy. This may not sound like ideal material for a feminist cult classic, but Marion Gibson explains why she thinks The Love Witch, a sumptuous, eye-popping film, is destined to be just that.
