Pros & Cons of Holding a Constitutional Convention

Join us at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 9th for our monthly meeting!  We will have a great discussion on the Pros & Cons of holding a Constitutional Convention. Our guest speakers will be Loren Enns from the Liberty Research Foundation and Keith Dunn from the John Birch Society.

There is a movement to convene a convention and several states (including Florida) have already passed the legislation that would allow this to happen.  This meeting will give us a great chance to hear both sides.

Article 5 of The Constitution provides two ways to ratify.   The traditional way, and the only way used since the Constitution was ratified, is for an amendment to pass by a 2/3’s vote in Congress and then ¾’s of the states (38 states) must vote to ratify.
The second way allows the states to bypass Congress with a 2/3’s vote of the state legislatures to hold a convention for proposing amendments.  There is a movement now to hold an Article 5 Convention and propose the following items:
1) Abolish & Replace the tax code; 2) Balance the federal budget  3)  Compel the government to follow the Constitution.  These would then go back to the states and would have to pass by 3/4s of the states.

Our big fund-raising effort this year is to raffle off a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm handgun.  We have tickets available at our meetings; we are asking all of our members to help sell these tickets.  We will have a booth at the River Reunion festival in Branford on July 4th and the drawing will be held that day.
